My 6 yrs old X38 system is showing its age. I am looking to get a completely new gaming rig build from the start. Budget is ~2000 dollars. Just wanna see what my options are since I am not quite up to date on latest tech.

Some preference:

1. Single monitor system. Dont have enough space for the crazy 3 monitors system.
2. Quietness.
3. Preferably AMD GPU.

What I will do with this system:
1. Mostly will be paper typing and web surfing.
2. genomic analysis sometimes. These software seems to rely quite heavily on CPU and mem size.
3. Gaming, single player games most of the time.
4. Video editing

Thanks!

Any cases you like?

If you have $2000 I would try to fit in a 4930K

All the rest are usual suspects:
4x4Gb ram
600w PSU
GTX 770 / AMD 290
Case of choice
250GB SSD of choice, Usually 840EVO or M500, others like HyperX and Neutron are also decent
long term storage, brand of choice, 3Tb is the sweet spot currently
AIO for x79 (ram clearance is a bitch I heard), NZXT Kraken series is well received, and the ever popular H100i.
I have absolutely no clue about x79 boards, so I am just going to drop in 2 suggestions: Extreme6 and UD3

Hmm. Let's see.

1. Definitely gonna overclock.
2. Prefer air cooling over water cooling. I know next to anything about building water cooling system.
3. 27'' or 24''. I have been using my samsung 226bw for the last 6 yrs so I really dont know any fancy stuff outside of my cave.
4. I like full tower cases. The one I'm using now is a thermaltake armor. I want a quality case but I dont want it to take too much of my budget.
5. Sometime I need to record experiment procedures and incoppeate it into my database. Most of the time I use coral video studio.

Is there any benefits to go 32gb ram? or even 64gb?

No real need to spend the whole $2,000 if you don't need to. I'd recommend using that current case if you want to save some extra money towards the important guts of your future system.

Total: $984.95
Budget left to use: $1,015.05

Eh, what about mouse, keyboard, webcam and audio system? Wi-Fi cards? I hate to route wires in my tiny apartments. No place to hide them!

Things like mouse, keyboard, webcam etc are very personal, so all we can do is to set aside some money for you to get those.

I think you meant to say thanks for happita's help. Besides, I'm sure you can choose your own minor components with a little thought.

IPS is the way to go! Not sure if you're looking for surround, 1080p or something like a 1440p monitor? I recommend 27" 1440P.
Also 2 x 8GB RAM instead of 4 x 4GB might be better. That way you have 2 spare slots if you desire 32GB for some strange reason.
