I recently upgraded my system to Asus Z97-Deluxe with an i7-4790K, so I wanted to try out the M.2 socket to upgrade my storage speed a little. When NewEgg offered the bare M6e drive for 87 cents/GB - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820249046 - I took the plunge. My board recognized it right away, and I did a clean install of Windows 8.1 x64 and all drivers. I had seen an article that claimed that the M6e was actually slower in real world usage than a fast SATA 600 SSD, so I ran some benchmarks, and damn it, it 's true! On an interface that's theoretically 40% faster, the M.2 drive was slower than my 840 Pro (128GB, the slowest 840 Pro) in almost every test, except maximum sequential reads and writes and a couple others.
.
Disappointing, but at least it doesn't feel any slower, and it cost about the same as a fast 2.5" SATA SSD. And I'm sure faster M.2 drives will follow. But if I replace it, what to do with the M6e? I might use it in a future mini-ITX build or maybe an NUC (if they ever include an M.2 slot), but that's about it. Any of you people who have a Z97 board with an M.2 slot, you should probably wait for something faster, or for a fast SATA Express drive. Maybe Samsung will release an M.2 drive soon with their new 3D NAND...
