HDD randomly failed and now my computer won't start

I copied and pasted a video from my phone to my computer, and then my computer started lagging and it ended up restarting itself without any authorization.
However, now, when trying to turn the computer on, I receive the BSOD which indicates me to restart my computer as the boot-up didn't finished.

I went to PCWorld and they informed me it was a "hard drive" and it needs to be replaced.

Would it, in anyway, be possible to retrieve the files that were stored on there?

Regards,
Jared.

Yessir, burn yourself a PartedMagic Live cd, it has file recovery tools that will strip the entire readable contents of a drive to another. Alternatively, you can try running Recuva.

Also, don't trust PC World, they're not the smartest people in the world.

Maybe. You would need to plug it into a functional computer and attempt to access/copy the files.

What was the specific message of the BSOD? Did it give a STOP code (e.g. 0x0000007a) or a filename (e.g. nv4disp.sys)?

With that description, you might wanna get some A/V recovery (Linux based) software... burn it to CD/DVD or a USB stick and check for possible infection.

Just saying. Maybe something that never affected the phones OS; however, it may have infected your computer's OS.

How to record Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 to a USB device and boot a computer from it

How to record Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 to a CD/DVD and boot my computer from the disk?
