Core2 E8400 Or Q6600 ?

Its not for me i have both CPU's and i'm putting a computer together for my sisters kids, he plays games like Minecraft, TF2, COD on a resolution of 1440x900 as it will run a GTX260.

Well, based on those games, i would say the e8400, simply because it was such a good overclocker.

yes, the q6600 has 4 cores, but at that level, I don't think it matters. Plus it takes a little more work to overclock.

No matter what, i recommend overclocking in order to overcome any limitations either have.

No matter what, i recommend overclocking in order to overcome any limitations either have.

i have a E8400 on my secondary rig, even with a 8800Ultra 768mb it run anything i throw at it (with minimal settings for the most hungrier games... but for those i have my main rig instead) under a OCZ Vendetta 2 i was able to clock it until 4.0 (not stable but it did boot and no BSOD) and 3.8(stable)

Well I also recommend the E8400, according to http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/704/Intel_Core_2_Duo_E8400_vs_Intel_Core_2_Quad_Q6600.html it is faster in single thread, has SSE4.1 and uses lower power and I am sure if you overclock it, it will be a pretty good CPU.

Better check the CPU list on the board. The 775 have a ton of limitations when it comes to CPUs

depend on the mobo imo.

all will oc the q66 like stink but only the later ones will let you push the fsb to where the e8400 should be.

some p35 will monster the wolf and everything later but not all p35/x38 will. they will push the q66 up otoh as it has a much lower starting fsb.

also the vrm might hold the q66 back while the e84 sucks less juice.

indeed ... believe it or not but it's the price i paid for a ASUS Striker Extreme, 4GB XMS2 800, C2D E8400, ASUS EN8800Ultra 768 (90$) on second hand ... sometime you have people who are not "completly crazy on the price when it's Intel/nVidia stuff"

the OC is secondary, i keep mine @3.0 but it can help even for 900p

dunno for a quad if its not a Q9650 at minimum i wouldn't even bother, a Wolfdale C2D still keep up with them.

Might be an option as its newer than core2quad

its faster for anything that uses 1 or two threads, which the games listed are.

As also stated, its lower power, wattage, heat, and OC's easily.

I'd say give him the Q6600 @ 3ghz. I've got my nephew setup with my old q9550 @ stock with a GTX285 and it plays all of those games fine.

back in the day i upgraded from a Q6600 to a xeon 3120 (which is basically an E8500) and my brother had the E8400... and they blew the Q6600 away in games. many of them OC'd to 3.2Ghz just fine, but when the E8x00's OC'd to 4GHz and beyond on the same mobos for half the wattage, it was no contest.

not for gaming, it isnt. games have always preferred less, faster cores. my dual core + HT i3 in my secondary system was faster than my six core phenom II 1090T in all the games i play (and why i went back to intel, after years on AMD)

I'd go with the Q6600 and just push the FSB to 1333. That will basically bring the Q6600 up to match the E8400 in single threaded performance and you have the multi-threaded performance if you need it.
