Power went out... kinda....

So I came home tonight to my power out, half way..... the lights, and TV work. The lights only work about half way. TV + cable/internet working. But my garage door opener was not... along with my heat, and other fun stuff. But anyway, I noticed my rigs MB light was not green on the Sabertooth 990FX that indicates it has power. I am assuming its because it could not draw enough power, I unplugged it right away.... I am hoping its due to the power.... but hoping anything is not damaged. Am I at risk for anything here? I am assuming not... I guess im just paranoid

Usually if half the house goes down, it is because one of the pair of 110V lines has become disconnected. With all the wind as of late in your area, call the power company and have them come reattach it to the house correctly.

One of the phases into your house was dead. One was alive. Depending on which circuit they were on, your stuff worked or didn't work. I too was surprised that all outlets are not on the same phase. But it makes sense, to distribute the electrical load.

Yes, I am in Michigan specifically.... 40 Minutes from Detroit.... Heavy winds tonight here. (I am sure all over)

I checked online on the power companies website, I am in an area with 500-1500 people that are experiencing this, so hopefully it will be addressed sooner rather than later. But then again, there were a TON of power outages all over, so who knows. Driving down the road near my house the lights in the street actually lost power as I was driving along.

But what was odd, the outlet I have the computer plugged into was still working... I can see my phone charger light on, and the monitor was getting power, however this is through a strip plugged into the wall. Also, my laptop charger is working on this computer I am currently using.

When I lived in Dover in an apartment, it was wired up to two different phases. Half the apartment was on one phase, another one on the other half, and all 208V outlets were two hots out of phase. One day a breaker on the transformer blew and only one leg of the split-phase was providing power. As a result half of my apartment had power and the other did not (in the sense of how the circuits were wired). All in all, it sounds like the same thing happened to you; a breaker on the transformer got tripped and now you running with just one hot circuit of the two coming from the pole.

I doubt you harmed your computer although it's not impossible. This is why UPS' are great investments as it would have mitigated the risk substantially.

Yeah, the computer was not on luckily. I was just worried because my monitor had power, and my phone charger did as well. But the green light on the mobo was not on, and they are all plugged into the same outlet.

Ill see what happens tomorrow - i think it should be fine.​

After all of this, I'd suggest getting a few UPSes. Not just for your computer, but for any other sensitive electronics as well, such as your TV.
