Hello Techpowerup!

I am new here and to keep it simple, the Coil Whine of my GPU makes when i start Games like Assassin's Creed Unity or something like that sound like a drill from the dentist. I tried to look in google but everything i tried to change through MSI Afterburner or Nvidia Inspector it didn't helped out.

I attached my current rig (144hz Monitor from Asus)

Please if possible, can you give me some advice even a moron like me could understand or some "screenshot" with settings i could copy?

Thank you!

Google 970 coil whine, it's a known problem, no setting will fix that, RMA-ing the card is your best bet

It happens to me too but not when playing, just sometimes when doing some GPU'S testing.

Yeah, best bet is to try to RMA the card. It's been hit or miss with the 970s. Mine doesn't have any but there are quite a few people complaining that there card does.

No coil whine here on my 970. It seems to be hit or miss.

Maybe a PSU issue?

It's probably the card. The amount of crap received (across aibs) over this has been epic. It makes one wonder if the min spec from nvidia was a little on the lean side. I mean, I know not everyone pushes 250w through their cards, but it's not impossible that most are going over 145w (or whatever the actual claimed max is...160w or whatever). Just look at the last review from Colorful here on tpu...

970 'tdp': 145w (plus 10% power limit)
Actual typical 970 max usage: 181w
Colorful 970 max: 237w (270w with factory bios mod)

I'm lucky enough not to have it, but if I did I would RMA it.

I seem to recall Shrout discussing it at some point in time...the fact all 980s (reference boards) are fine, but 970s were obviously aib designs from the beginning. In typical Shrout fashion, he blamed everyone but nvidia for using cheap components. In typical me fashion, I blame nvidia for probably stating they need less power (or space between lesser components) than they actually do.

It seems it's been mostly rectified now by the companies using better components and rolling out newer designs, so odds are better anything from the current lots are less likely to have it.

That's because the game you're playing doesn't stress the card enough to make is go crazy.

Not A PSU issue, google 970 Coil Whine, the first batch was messed up, the cost of getting the newest toys
