hello clockers,
currently owner of a EVGA SR2 + Two Xeons X5690 @ 4.0 Ghz for 1.30v
Fully satisfied, but my question now and especially what concerns me
is that this RIG still has plenty of time to get old?
with all that is shaping up, how many years left him before
the Z97 or X99 is really worth a port in x58?
I await your reply with impatience, because it requires that I decided
I do not want to regret my uppgrade later
the SR2 is still the monster again ?
thank you very much And sorry for my poor english :)

Well a 5960X at 4.6Ghz is just straight up faster in everything. But not many 5960X get that far so for multi threaded tasks your setup is better. However in gaming a 5960X is always going to be faster. It's also more power efficient has more SATA 3 ports supports M.2 can have 64GB of ram and support PCI-e 3.0. But unless you have 3 or 4 R9 290s or better you don't need an X99 system.

And what about the Z97 ?
Basically the same thing but with 1/2 the multi threaded performance of your system.

Your system launched in 2011. Still 1-2 years relevant life left in that 5-year lifespan we should all expect from our systems. But yes, there is faster, better.

One of the big differences is cache throughput, your old 1366 system is a outdated a bit for sure, but still relevant thanks to the 24 threads you can push. However, you still have DDR3, while DDR4 has recently launched... maybe 2P 2011-v3 is something you might want to look into if you have the cash for such an investment. There aren't any consumer-focused boards like the SR2 yet, though.

So, with whatever you use your computer for, does it work as intended? Use it until you find the performance is lacking. When the performance is no longer there with new apps/games/software, then consider looking at new hardware.

OK so I have a question. 5820's are limited in PCIe lanes compared to the 5960, but what if you have a dual socket system like the SR2 but a x99 version. Would this allow you to use more lanes than 1 5960 and get the OC benefits from the 5820s?

You can't have 2 5820s on one board. Multi CPU configs are a Xeon only feature.

It really all comes down to what you're doing with your rig. If it's for gaming & all the casual stuff - yes, there are newer and better options out there. A 5960X with one (or more) recent graphic cards will make you happy and cost a lot less. However, if you are actually using the power of all those CPU cores for stuff like compression, encryption, heavy video editing or running multiple VMs, then yes, those X5690's absolutely rule! I moved from a dual E5620 setup and while I wouldn't call it a "monster" ;) this dual X5690 setup is certainly "up to the task". And while I do believe it will be for the next couple of years, there will come a time when I'll have to upgrade to the latest in technology and enjoy the benefits it has to offer. At this moment however, I don't care about M.2-drives or a few extra SATA-3 ports, since I use PCIe-drives. Energy efficience is probably also not the greatest of our concerns, right? :) So, AK47, be proud of your rig and the stuff it can do for you now and years to come. I doubt you won't be able to run the latest games & software for the next few years and if so - well, you can upgrade to the newest dual Xeon setup or you could settle for a powerful, yet cost-effective consumer-PC. There is absolutely no need to do so now in my opinion, seeing as you are well satisfied, like you mentioned.
In reference to the Cinebench scores, well, newer H/W + same bench S/W = better score - so who cares? Apples & oranges.
If you've got the time, try out Cinebench R15 and compare. My score = 1846 :) Keep the faith, AK47!

That rig is quite a beast, I would love to run one like it for World Community Grid. In gaming it is not the best anymore, but for most games it should be plenty.

Sheees louise :rockout:, I don't really know about this in particular, but the real Intel SkullTrail the IT had at where I worked told me a while back it's still screaming ass, so freaking ahead of it's time he rambled on about how the FB-Dimms , 2 QX9775 CPU's [OC close to 4 Ghz] and 4 GPU's allow to have their own path for each buss {16 I believe] but any rate something like 4 Quadro's, and swaped in some GTX's for gaming sometime.
He even decided to try the Scythe Ninja's like ine after he seen it, then when he seen how it did with my temps on the Skt775 [Q6700]
MAJOR E-PEN can be had with it tweaked ! LOL
Any way yea, I' run it for 10 years !!!
Crap I've been on this 2600K, and don't see any need other than Gfx, even then it should still do 4K with proper card few years from now !
Mabey not apples to orange's, server vs Extreme gaming board, but you get the jist.................

Keep it :toast::toast:

It may in extreme situations matter what your application is... But anyone who tells you that a SR-2 Xeon system is slower at gaming or not ideal for gaming either doesn't know what they are talking about or is trying to feel better about the thousands they have spent chasing new hardware...

This is July 2016... And my SR-2 with SLI 980ti games like a bat out of hell. Newest titles available... Maxed maxed maxed 100-400 for on everything. Dual x5690 at 4 ghz is NOT just for miners and data crunchers and encoding!!

Would it be economically smart to build one now? No. Did I just score 22,000 on firestrike physics test as the 87th fastest computer in the world? Yes.

Brand new 1700$ 6950k scores 21,000 stock...

Do not disregard the SR - 2 and triple chan!

You dug up an old thread to brag about an irrelevant score that isn't benchmarked individually?
Physics scores vary according to the sum of hardware.
