Well... I've had a great opportunity present itself recently. I've always wanted to open my own shop or at the least work at a computer shop. Well... I asked about a job and the guy said sorry... I'm closing up soon. I thought for a second and asked... you willing to sell what you got here? In short the answer was yes. I've already got the go ahead from the property owner and have purchased the rights to all the IP related to the store and their current inventory which is really nice. All I gotta do now is take care of a few legal things, like getting a business license and insurance of some sort, get the utilities in my name, etc. but I'm more or less now running my own store! Here's the place...

and its current site...

http://rebootpctech.com/custom-pcs/

I got a little work to do with the site.

For now i'll mostly be doing repairs and clean up work until I get enough business to start selling custom builds or even doing build-to-order jobs. Will probably expand to phone repairs and console repairs... still got a few ideas i'm considering. There's enough for me to get a few computers built and ready to go for sale and I've got a few laptops to start with as well. Hopefully I can get into custom case builds and such soon! I'm pretty excited, and a bit nervous too lol. Never ran my own business before. But I think I can make it work. I'll try to remember to get a few pics of the place tomorrow. I'm open to suggestions!

Software A lot.
Benchmark Scores Its fast. Enough.
Run a PC cleanup special, then go visit local businesses and pitch a maintenance and cleanup program, then lastly pitch a hardware sale, setup with standard off the shelf components that you will keep in stock for same day repairs for cheap.

Dell repair PSU? $50-100
Standard 300W PSU $17

Ohh, your Dell motherboard died, that will be a whole new computer.
Standard components? $49 plus labor, no data lost and same day repair.

Where is this located, if you don't mind me asking? Heck, I may take a visit if I don't have to cross too many state boundaries.\

EDIT: Ah, fricking Georgia. Sorry dude, but I don't plan on heading off the west coast any time soon. Best of luck though! ;)

Nothing like having the ability to own your own business! There is nothing quite like being your own boss. :peace:

If you are ever in the need to have remote service done, shoot me a shout. I do that type of work quite a lot. :p

I was a partner and founder in a hydro dipping business up until June, it wasn't lucrative yet but it was fun and so were the customers!

I hope you become profitable and busy straight away and that there was a current client-base as well.

Best of luck and congratulations to you on your new ventures, makes me wanna get back in the ring again! Just gotta graduate college first... :D

That's really neat! I'm planning on finding some sort of tech job, but I'd probably be restricted to bestbuy. No one wants to trust a 16yo with $500-$2000 in PC parts. :p
If you got good deals I might drive over for my next build! A bit of a drive though from Alabama, considering I can't drive out-of-state yet. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Good luck though! Hope it works out well.

yea i've got a few plans already, like opening a business account with tiger direct for things like power supplies and such. There is already a decent customer base there, which is why I made sure the phone number there stayed the same lol. The place is already on google maps and in phones books and such so I saw no reason to change the number. The name pretty much says it all... PC Repair and Customs. I think that pretty much covers what i'll be doing. I am considering console and phone repair as well. I might even get a license to sell pre-paid phones and accessories (like metro or cricket or w/e, tracfone maybe). Heck I might even do car audio installations too, maybe even car computers (no not the engine control stuff, but a computer in the dash). I think I have a good opportunity at my location,... I don't see a lot of competitors really close, or at least not on that stretch of road. There's a lot of traffic that drives through off of a main highway nearby on their way to Athens and other nearby towns. I've already introduced myself to my neighbor businesses and they seem to like me so far. I'll probably talk to a local car dealership (its a big one!) and see if they'll let me do some of their hardware repairs for them. I know the person that does their I.T. work and i know he needs the help.

I've still got a lot of ideas of what I want to do but I think I need to keep it simple for now and concentrate on keeping the current customers happy lol. I'll probably end up hiring some help later on as well. One thing I do want to do is make sure there's at least someone present at the store if I have to leave and get parts or something. I might also offer some repair deals with some of the smaller businesses in town too.

Soo much to do lol, can't wait to get it all sorted out and going!

Congrats on the store and business purchase! :toast:

I am considering console and phone repair as well.

I think doing mobile device repair is a solid idea. Everybody has smartphones and tablets, and almost all of them need a a screen replacement done here or then since people love to drop their stuff. I've done quite a few for friends and family, and if I charged for it, it would have been nice ;)

I've also talked to a few that have brought their devices to a shop to be fixed, and standard minimum seems to be ~ $100 for maybe 30 minutes if work; that being for phones while tablets are a little higher. All in all, seems like a worthwhile idea.

Also, hope you're feeling all better :)

All the best with your new venture.
There is absolutely no chance of me ever visiting your shop....however....my advice would be

Try not to employ anybody else til you are absolutely sure the business can afford it.

Seek advice before you make any big investments.

keep control and actually manage the business rather than assuming business is good.

REMEMBER TO TAKE TIME OFF its easy to neglect other important areas of your life when you are so immersed.

just a few thoughts from someone with a little experience.

Good Luck.

A friend of mine Logan has the same setup. It's my go to when I need a lil' help to get me out of a tight spot. I have also "always" bought hardware from him because he keeps his pricing reasonable and is an all around nice guy to deal with. Heck he handles all of my rma's.
He does the same sort of service inc. Hardware, p.c. cleanup/repair/install, custom build, O.E.M. purchase Cellular repair, Car audio/Alarm, Sat t.v. and some t.v. sales etc. I personally have sent everyone I can't help to him for repairs and I'm not the only one. He is doing quite well for himself and his Father/Partner. (He also deals with depot of old parts.) I know he has one or two good suppliers but not sure of tiger direct.
I guess what I'm saying is as long as your great to your clients and are honest up front about timelines and pricing they will be good to you. Logan has never said he can't get something I need. Plus you can always use the buy/sell forum for cleaning out some of your treasure finds of good used quality parts or clearance items.;)
Best of luck and stay active on this thread so we can see how your making out.

Just a quick update on the shop, sorry I've been busy lol

As you can tell i've probably been busy with the shop, but business is finally picking up. Its a tough area it seems, but once I get more advertising going I'll be good to go. I'm also working another part time job to cover bills until the store picks up more business.

A lot of people seem to think I'm a Radio Shack of sorts and keep asking for things like speakers to plug into their phones, mice, etc. I'd love to stock and sell those kinds of things but atm I don't have the funds for that lol. Mostly working on repairs/upgrades, etc. I've done quite a few virus removals.

Though I've got one big job that just came in... The dealership down the road wants me to set up 24 of their Intel NUC computers! They gave me one to clone from, and want me to copy it to the 24 new systems that literally just came in. Did a rough estimate and its roughly $20k worth of computers.

Pics

The manufacture date on the things is 3/12/15 lol

I wasn't a fan of the NUC that my old place of work used - overpriced POS'es. These ones use much better hardware (at least from the available specs).

They also have Win 7 (better than the Win 8 and all the issues it brought with working with the companies software) which is nice. Congrats on the landed job. Hopefully all goes well, that's when people start tossing your name around a lot. I had a buddy that left work to open his own computer repair business - it took about a year before he started landing jobs such as the one you posted. Last I heard he had a business owner that has a multi-million dollar company that he specifically goes to them for computer purchases and repairs.

All the best to you.

Congrats! I've used a version of those NUCs at school. Not bad little boxes.

Congrats on your venture. Most of your revenue will come from servicing businesses. Focus on that and keeping your overhead low. You can also make some money as an off-site backup solution. Polish up on your networking skills.

Keep us posted. Exciting stuff.
