Im building a low profile wooden pc case that i can hang on a wall, like a picture.

The top will be perspex and the rest wood. This is the basic layout.
kkhkjoij.PNG

In order to make it low profile i want to swap the current 2 core Celeron G540 which needs an add on gpu
( currently a 9500gtx) to something cheap with reasonable graphics on the chip.

It has a Shuttle psu which is 250 w.

I was thinking on the lines of the i3 550 mainly because one just sold on ebay for £ 12.50.

The board is socket 1155 so there are plenty of options. Cost is a big factor for me though

From the research ive done this Intel cpu would at least equal the Athlon ii x4 640 and HD 5850 which it might replace.

I will try with the stock Intel cooler initially although one feature of the build will be the fan from a PS 3 which i think would look ace and has a high cfm.
yyury5y5.PNG

Initially i want a cheap Intel to get me going.

If im happy with it i may well sell the AMD rig and invest in i5 or whatever.

This case will never be deep enough to accomodate an add on gpu so i want some intel hd on the chip that is reasonably capable.

I would welcome any suggestions if you have experience of the H61m and i3 or suggestions for something better.

i3 550 is socket 1156 LINK You might want to consider AMD APU?

^
yes H61 = 1155 Socket.
I3 550 = 1156 Socket

You would need an I3-2100 or so

So the socket type is too old for decent Intel Hd graphics ?

can you suggest any 1155 socket chip that might fit the bill ? I,m no Intel expert but doesnt the is 2100 have much inferior graphics on board ?

EDIT
ive done some research. Think i might be fooked, however in do have the option of using a pcie riser and putting the gpu on top of the hdd ( hidden under a pair of fans in the pic).

Its important for the build to be low profile or itll look pretty stupid on a wall.

Thanks for your help :lovetpu:

What are you trying to do with the system? No Intel CPU has good enough graphics for gaming. The best Intel graphics for socket 1155 would be the HD 4000 on some of the 3000 series CPU's, like the 3570K LINK

I found a chart somewhere last night which compared Intel HD on chip graphics to HD 5??? series and my unmathematical conclusion was that the Intel HD 4 ??? on chip was on a par.

Im open to any suggestions. My Intel experienced is limited as regards to building> I have bought 3 Shuttles over the years and managed them rather than tinkered with them.

Its time to put one in a box and hang it on the wall, thats all, nothing major, just a whim which i am hoping will have a reasonable level of performance and a big sense of style.
:rockout: :rockout: :rockout:

Sorry,..... to answer your question , low profile is the key to it. I think i can make it 100mm deep but an add on gpu will be too deep.

I dont need anything more capable than my current HD 5850, the most i do currently is NFS shift 2 and it gives me 70 fps on ultra when i play that.

We are getting GTA 5 but i may upgrade my sons pc to do that, from what i have read, (and i dont want a debate about GTA please,) the HD 5850 and a reasonable 2 core Intel or 4 core AMD will play it ok i reckon.

Anyway back to the Picasso, potentially a pcie riser for HD 5850 to sit on the hdd, flat and out of the way and a better second user Intel chip. The PSU is defo going to be an issue.

Fook this needs a lot more thought before its going to work. Feel free to add more thoughts they are appreciated.

EDIT 3570k way out of my price range however given the APU option on the 2 AMD mobos in the house it might be the way to go.

Thank you for both for your contributions. As you can see my thought process has been spilled out in its entirty in this thread.

Actually, how mad at me would you have been if you'd gotten an APU for your existing motherboard?:slap:

I think i will ditch the underpowered Shuttle psu, ive got a 500w that is only 90mm high.

If i lie the HD 5850 flat on the hdd using a PCIE riser then i will get the best 1155 socket Intel i can find cheap.

Suggestions welcome though i will do my own research.

Using a half height GPU like those used in SFF PC's would allow you to use it in a small case and possibly with that low power PSU.
Edit, found this Galaxy GTX 750Ti low profile http://graphics-cards.electronicsnif.com/l/1126/Galaxy-GeForce-GTX-750-Ti-OC-Low-Profile

I am a total skinflint, ive no doubt its a great idea though

So the modified question now is to find a socket 1155 cpu which will be a reasonable match for HD 5850 on a Gigabyte H61M DS2.

Heat is going to be an issue so overclocking isnt a factor.

I dont know a lot about Intel cpus.

Would a decent Pentium do it ?

Whatever i buy will be second user.. im not at all bothered with K chips

Currently there is a celeron G540 on the board at 2.5ghz

Advice please.... i have everything apart from the cpu upgrade.

The HD 5850 gives me 70 fps in NFS shift 2. which is all i do pretty much.

I like my GPU, that will stay, just need a socket 1155 that will compliment it, doesnt have to be a recent gen. Just good enough for the board and gpu.

The hd 5850 is currently with a 970 series gigabyte board which all works well but its too big for my pc on the wall project, hence the H61 m

Am i paying more for an Intel chip with HD on board.?
Would i be better off with an earlier gen chip and utilize my current gpu rather than Intel HD

I play with AMD and as you can tell I need help with Intel

What about something like this? Then you should be able to reuse the GPU you have if you want to.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA32C1C86922

Yes that is exactly what i intend using except longer it will pass over the cpu fan so will need clearance.

The cpu is the issue. " any one " doesnt really help.

Ive tried goooooogling the combination but i know damn well i will get a better, more considered answer from TPU.

SOCKET 1155 with enough cores, threads and clock speed to compliment my other bits.

Why not just use what you have for now, and then decide where you want you CPU to be at after testing things out?

PS
If all you are going to play is NFS SHIFT 2 I don't see any problems using the G540.
