Megaton [Official Site] is being developed by Alfonso del Cerra, a Spanish developer representing Pentadimensional Games. It’s demoing at GDC soon, set to be an indie release. We’re not 100% sure when this is due, but we have been given a brief trailer to swoon over.
Megaton – Rainfall has the player put in genre I can only describe as a “first person superman-‘em-up”. You appear to fly around at some pretty intense speeds across the landscape (and did I see a hint of upper atmosphere?), although the gameplay for the actual player is limited beyond flying around like a Typhoon fighter. The essence of the game is that you, the player, are a super hero, tasked with defending a city (Megaton?) from being utterly destroyed in some rather inventive ways by aliens. It looks like a cross between Independence Day and Superman basically, only the aliens destroy building with space-worms, generic laser beams, and in some cases, peel the building apart rather effortlessly.
It looks pretty swish when you briefly see the player flying around at the speed of sound, but like most mega-city exploring games, it can get a little boring just flying around really fast. Hopefully the story and combat orientated gameplay is inventive enough to hold your attention long enough after you’re sick of dive bombing from the stratosphere.
