GOT A HUGE Problem - Windows 8 Key

Checking with speccy shows a product key but it could be for 8.1

afaik, there is no difference between windows 8 and 8.1 product key.

well I just de activated my key hopefully when I install windows 8 there will be no problems :/

Once you get the key. You should be able to use one of the generic microsoft keys to install 8.1 and then change the key upon completion.

The keys aren't pirated, just good for install and won;t activate. Google and you should find them.

They allow installation, but wont activate online - lets you install 8.1 with the dummy key, then put a legit 8.0 key in later.

just make sure you put your legit key in ASAP, because these keys only work for a very short period of time.

He might have not gotten a COA. I didn't as I got the upgrade offer or whatever it was called for $15. Microsoft emailed me the key and I downloaded the iso.

I did that same thing. But sense he has a disk set he must have a COA right? Always keep that stuff under lock and key

If you are trying ti figure out what your key is, theres is a simple script you can put into a text file with .vbs extention name.

Put the below code in a text file and save it as filename.vbs:

This will pop your product key up in a window to show you what it is. You can do CTRL + C to save it and put it into a word file or something to safe keeping. As the howtogeek link says.

I bought the media too when I got mine for the $15 and they never sent a COA with it.

Well first of all the windows key are not meant to be used on another system, they are bound to the hardware you bought or used.
I bought win 8.0 for my laptop but since i sold the laptop it no longer can be used unless i use the same harddrive in a somewhat similar system. cpu/mobo/memory/harddrive.
I once had a huge fail in my system and swapped the mobo/mem by another brand, without any issues it simply found the changed hardware and ran perfect after the hardware swap.

That's not completely true. Retail license can be moved to another system but one one at a time or what ever the license is for. OEM is bound to one system and parts change when there is a failure.
