I'm getting a brand new pre-built gaming pc using OEM parts from a local pc store. Would this be a good idea? I've heard that OEM gpu is underclocked a bit, and is of less quality. Is this true?

Here's the build specification.

Cooler // Intel Performance CPU Cooler

@PeasantStation

What is the brand of the pc? Or just your local store assembling the pc?

Try to canvass the price of each component in your local store, i'm sure its less than the asking price.

It's better to build your own if you want to save some bucks.

But if you insist a prebuilt pc, you can go with Cyberpowerpc, origin, maingear and some stuff like that.

You're paying about $300 for them to spend the 20 minutes it takes to put together.

So roughly $900/hr in labor.

If it's a small local shop they might have higher prices that usual, also there's support. If it's worth it depends on the quality of the store and the interest/time the buyer has.

So it's up to the buyer. It'll work just fine, but you will save a bunch of money on building it yerself. It will take longer than 20 minutes to get everything up and running, especially if you've never done it before, even more especially if you have to install an OS too.

EDIT: Had a lookise at the link now, and ... well. The same components on pcpartspicker ends up at $1432, so the price isn't that bad actually (unless pcpartspicker Canada is useless, I have no idea, also I have not taken into account at what you might actually need which might be something completely different). I don't like the logo though, and the pictures are lazy, and it's a Craigslist ad. I wouldn't get that, but that's just me. If he's known locally and have a good reputation and you really don't want to/have the time to assemble it yourself it's not it might not be horrible.

Anyway, what resolution do you plan to game at?

Decent pc that you'll enjoy. Plus soon that OS will be Win10 ;)

This I don't understand. If you're getting an EVGA 980 SC, that's mighty fine and will game hard for you.

Thank's for the advice.

Since the owner is using oem gpu parts, i would like to know if their is any differences between retail. OEM gpu is underclocked a bit, and is of less quality. Is this true?

If it says it's a EVGA GeForce GTX980 Superclocked ACX2.0 4GB GDDR5 it should be exactly that. If it's underclocked you can yell at the seller. And read my post again, I edited it. ;)

The OEM bit is to me essentially marketing speak. He's trying to say he's passing on savings to you, but afaik there's no magical place where you can get parts for cheap, and he didn't get them directly from the factory. He probably bought them from a distributor like every other small retailer.

From the Craiglist add, the only possible OEM part is the hard drive everything else should be retail.

There's no such thing as an OEM EVGA GeForce GTX980 Superclocked ACX2.0 4GB, it's only retail.

The value of the computer is $1440.20 CAD (including -$40 of Mail in rebate) and excluding Windows 7.

So for $100 you get Windows, they build it for you and you have a place to go if a component fails (they probably take care of RMAs).

$1535.71 CAD is a pretty good price.

Full list

CPU // Intel Core i5 4690K Unlocked Quad-Core 3.9GHZ Processor LGA1150 Haswell 6MB Cache = $289.99 CAD
Cooler // Intel Performance CPU Cooler = $0 CAD
Motherboard // ASUS Z97-E Chipset Motherboard = $158.75 CAD -$20 Mail in rebate
RAM // 16GB Kingston HyperX Fury Black Edition DDR3-1866 = $109.98 CAD
Video Card // EVGA GeForce GTX980 Superclocked ACX2.0 4GB GDDR5 Graphics Card = $659.99 CAD -$20 Mail in rebate
SSD // Sandisk Ultra-Plus 128GB Solid State Drive = $61.99CAD
HDD // Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM 64MB Cache Hard Disk Drive = $58.98 CAD
Case // Corsair Carbide Series SPEC-01 Red LED ATX Gaming Case = $59.99 CAD
Power Supply // Seasonic 600w 80+ Bronze Continuous-Power Power Supply Unit = $80.53 CAD (Didn't find a 600w so picked Seasonic S12II-620 Bronze 620W instead)

Your kinda confusing what OEM means. Most of us on here have built our own PCs with just the same parts you're using. You are just buying retail parts and having someone assemble them for you. You copy of Windows on the other hand may very well be OEM with that machine.

For that price you should be getting retail box parts, which carry a longer manufacture's warranty. I've had shops build gaming PCs for me before when I was first starting out in gaming and you CAN request they use retail box parts and save the boxes for easy retrieval of serial numbers in case of RMA.

If they're trying to convince you otherwise and calling everything OEM, I would shop elsewhere, or build your own with some YouTube (build video tutorials), forum and/or friend consultation.

The only things that are typically always OEM in custom built PCs are the HDD and OS.

Do keep in mind guys, prices in Canada for PC parts are pretty high right now. 980 Ti's are like $850 vs the $650 in the US. Regular 980 is still $700 or so vs $500 in the US.
