So my new card just arrived. MSI GTX 980ti Gaming 6G. Excited to get home and start installing and benching. I decided on the MSI because my current 780ti is same brand and has been an excellent card that overclocks really well.

I decided to get the video card before I moved to Skylake/DDR4. I am very curious to see how this card performs on my i7 930 and if it is being held back much. I know there are others out there in my position still on overclocked i7 9xx and i7 2x00's.

Unfortunately EK hasn't released a full coverage block for this yet but their configurator says they have one coming soon. Which is ok because I can see what this card can do on stock cooling.

Cheers!

IMO If you were gonna watercool it anyway i would have saved a little cash and just gone with a reference model.

You probably wouldnt save a huge amount, but thats still a few cups of coffee at starbucks

HIgher resale value down the road is the main reason I usually buy the higher end coolilng/card.

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
Pay more, get more = net wash.

Regardless I would have went aftermarket too. Reference is good, but I wouldn't trust it as much as a card with a better pcb power delivery.

Yup, it's for sale...

So the GTX980 scores 81.1 ASIC

I have doubt...as much as I want to upgrade to Skylake/DDR4 I just am not sure it's worth the price at this point. I honestly hope I am wrong because I want to freaking upgrade. It needs to be worth it though.

Well after a weekend of playing around with this card on various games and benchmarking. Skylake better be awesome because right now there is no way I would recommend spending $1k on Cpu/Mobo/DD4 for others in the same situation.

People with highly overclocked i7 9xx's and others with i7 2600k or similar there is very little reason to upgrade. Spend the money a a high end Video Card. That is unless Skylake puts out some amazing numbers once overclocked. Either way I am running some of the most intensive games at a pretty high resolution (2560x1600) and all running the Highest video settings.

Now look at all the money you saved! :D Seriously, if your current system does everything you want it to and your gaming is also where you want it with an awesome GPU, then there isn't any reason to upgrade, you're right. (Unless someone just wants to).

LOL, it's a strong urge, and probably the primary reason most people upgrade. Most people don't actually NEED an upgrade.

I'm in the same position. I want to do a new build but it just doesn't make sense for me. Now I hear that it may be a year and a half before Canonlake. Sigh. Maybe I can bear it somehow.

Sigh...I will still probably upgrade to skylake. Haha. I am DUE for a freaking new CPU and DDR4. But it is purely based on Want and not Need.

Having a 2600K is more than a good reason to "waste" money to Skylake.

I had an AMD64 X2 machine as a temporary PC after I sold my i7-920 machine some months ago. I can say that the boost was a way more than from a 965BE to 2500K some time ago. :D

A nice OC of around 4.2+Ghz on a 2600k will still be a solid gaming rig with a new video card. The biggest Bang for Buck you could do for your system would be get a high end video card and more RAM...4GB is very low.

Benchmark Scores well I've fried a 775' P4 12 years ago, that counts?
sandies are beasts for OC... golden chips with soldering between IHS and CPU die, what a time when intel didn't skimp on processors manufacture...

I have a 2500k @ 4.5 Ghz with the same GPU, a MSI 980Ti Gaming.

My 980ti has a dreadful ASIC of 65.4, but it doesn't stop it from going 1450Mhz on the core and 4000Mhz on the memory with stock voltage.
By the way, I slapped a G10 + H90 on it because it was going 75C in Witcher3. Now it is <55C on Witcher3 and Battlefield4 with ambient temps 27-29C

The G10+H90 is heaven. The system is now completely silent in full load. I run all my fans <1000RPM. Also ambient temps are starting to lower, which means even lower GPU temps :D

Sounds nice man! I can't wait to get mine on water as well. I am not used to my case temps being so high, and to see the card in the 70's freaks me out a little bit..haha. Hey, would you mind running an unigine heaven benchmark and posting results with the settings setup from this link? http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/unigine-heaven-4-0-benchmark-scores.198888/

I have also clocked my 980ti as far as I am willing to without watercooling. But I did hit 1513Mhz boost clock and 4000mhz on GDDR with no voltage increase, just allowed power up to 110%. So pretty excited to get this on a nice full coverage EK block.
