Skylake build advice - goal -> FullHD gaming + ready for 4k

Hello all,
After 8 years and 3 laptops I finally have opportunity to build new PC and Skylake is way to go. But since I was out of "hobby" for a few years I need advice on some components.
My budget is 1500 - 1600$ max (my default currency is in CZK so this is approx. amount) lcd screen included.

What is my goal?
- FullHD gaming now
- future-proof and upgrade ready for 1440p/2160p gaming when it goes cheaper (graphic card change only)

Here are some restrictions which I'd like to follow
- Asus components preferable (good service support for me)
- i5 6600k CPU
- Asus GTX Strix 960 OC 2GB
- 8GB DDR4
- 1 TB WD Blue/256GB SSD
- Fractal R5 case
- 22" - 24" FullHD screen

First , the graphic card choice. My budget is limited so I can't buy GTX 980 and I don't like 3,5GB 970 for the price. As my goal now is only FullHD gaming I think 960 is very sufficient.
Second, motherboard choice. There is a lot of them right now and I really don't know what is best value/price and what I will really need in future. I would really like to have some board from Asus Maximus VIII range but if it's too much I can go cheaper way. As I wrote above I want solid base (MB+CPU+PSU) and only upgrade graphic card/screen for playing in higher resolution.

I will be glad for any advice from you. Thank you!

Oops, sorry didn't see that your currency was different I guess I have to change my suggestion, hold on a second please.

I actually honestly don't know of any pc part dealers within the Czech Republic. Sorry I wish I could help you but I don't really know how to help someone in your area shop for pc parts :( My apologies.

By the way I took a look at the parts you selected and they all look very good. The only suggestion I have is to get a different psu. Corsair's RM series is fairly low quality. If you can find a psu that's around the same wttage for the same price from Seasonic or XFX that'd be great, those are two very trusted psu manufacturers. Hope I was of some help :)

If you plan on overclocking, then 6600K is sort of ok. If you don't plan on overclocking, go with 6700K. In which case you can grab the cheapest motherboard you can get (like ASUS Z170-A). Where with overclocking, you'll have to be a bit picky. Though even Z170-A will give you some overclocking options.

GTX 960, sure it'll run 1080p, but you can forget about running 1080p at highest possible settings. At least not in the newest games at really high framerate that is. For doing that really comfortably, you'll need R9-290X/R9-390X or GTX 980. If you're on tight budget, finding a cheap R9-290X could be an option worth exploring (since it's basically the same card as R9-390X). R9-390X and GTX 980 are still rather expensive...

A cheap 770 will also work.

i would say if you go over laptop then take the real advantage of desktop which is better GPU.
gtx 970 will be nice , also r9 290x or 390
or you can take some older good cards like gtx680-gtx770, r9 280x , r9 290, they still better tan gtx960

been rocking a 290x gamer @2k for a while and it is still beasting it :)

if you want to keep the spend down on a new gpu the 950 is a better buy imo giving much more of the 960s performance for much less cost, % wise.

Hi! Thank you all for the inputs but your are a bit late :) A month late to be exact. I have already bought everything. Components are same as in my second post

- i5 6600k
- ASUS Z170 PRO Gaming
- GTX 960 ASUS STRIX
- CORSAIR RM Series RM550 550W
- Crucial 2x 4GB, 2400
- SSD Crucial 256GB and 1TB WD Green
- Fractal R5
- LCD ASUS VN427HA

I am very satisfied so far! Very silent PC, low temperatures and great performance in FullHD. Witcher 3 is running over 50fps on High, AC Unity around 30fps (shitty port), Mad Max and MGS V are 60 FPS on ultra. And here is pic.

I keep seeing 2K, are there monitors out with that resolution (2048x1080)? Or are we talking 1080p/i?

This is why I despise manufacturer's for calling things 4K. I always thought we defined monitor resolution by their height, not their width (a la 1080p = 1920x1080, 1440p = 2560 x 1440, 1600p = 2560x1600).

I think they properly mean 2560x1440 which should be named 2,5k but just got named 1440p if i am not mistaking but i am not sure.

That green drive is just fine. OP can get a Caviar Blue for ~$60. I've been using my Caviar Green 1TB since 09' and it still runs fine. They don't need an enterprise HDD.

Iunno what model green you have but by all means mine doesn't show any slowness from age, or even for how much space is used on it.

Mind you I had a game running and this is my game drive.

I think they properly mean 2560x1440 which should be named 2,5k but just got named 1440p if i am not mistaking but i am not sure.

i did indeed :) well 2560/x as while i am now running/1440 i was /1600 prior to this screen.

4K is just a marketing buzzword. For me, 4K is actually 2160p...

it is all just marketing buzz words as pc res have no real standards. screen makers make them up all the time xD

1440p is exactly what i mean in regard to 2k, 1440p has started to become something of a halfway house between hd and 4k with the new ranges of 1440p ultra wide 21:9 ratio screens.

so why not right?

This is why I despise manufacturer's for calling things 4K. I always thought we defined monitor resolution by their height, not their width (a la 1080p = 1920x1080, 1440p = 2560 x 1440, 1600p = 2560x1600).
What I find interesting is that 4k has 4 times as many pixels as 1080p. That's not the case with 1440p which I think is mislabeled as "2k" IMHO.
Code:
 1080p: 1920 x 1080 = 2,073,600
"4k": 3840 x 2160 = 8,294,400
8,294,400 / 2,073,600 = 4

This is why I despise manufacturer's for calling things 4K. I always thought we defined monitor resolution by their height, not their width (a la 1080p = 1920x1080, 1440p = 2560 x 1440, 1600p = 2560x1600).

It's becoming even more confusing. There's a couple of resolutions that are becoming popular. 2560 X 1080 and 3440 X 1440. 1080p and 1440p don't necessarily mean what we've always called them in the past.

What I find interesting is that 4k has 4 times as many pixels as 1080p. That's not the case with 1440p which I think is mislabeled as "2k" IMHO.
Code:
 1080p: 1920 x 1080 = 2,073,600
"4k": 3840 x 2160 = 8,294,400
8,294,400 / 2,073,600 = 4

2560 X 1080 is also referred to as 2K. I'm sure you already know this but some others may not 2560 X 1440p is 4X HD (1280 X 720). That's why it's called WQHD for Quad HD.

I think we may have to just refer to resolutions in full soon; will be a mouthful for discussion, but at least misunderstandings will be kept at bay.
