Japan Display crammed 8K into a 17-inch LCD

Now, Japan Display has pushed the limits of screen resolution yet again by announcing a 17.3-inch 8K LCD module capable of running at a smooth frame rate of 120Hz. If you're trying to get your head around how many pixels that involves, JD is way ahead of you: it's 510 pixels per inch. The manufacturer says that the high resolution will offer an element of depth to images, and that it could be ideal for video-editing, medical displays and even as gaming screens. Unfortunately, that's all we know for now, but the LCD will be at CEATEC 2015 with all its millions of pixels on show."

You will need a helluva GPU to do much of anything. I hope you have crotch thermal armor before you use that "laptop."

8K / 120Hz / 24-bit = 120 Gbit/s of uncompressed video. I wonder how they transmitted that. But honestly, if you have an 8K display, a 24-bit color depth is woefully inadequate. I hope they're using 36-bit at least and preferably 48-bit.

My eyesight is so sharp that even this display looks horribly pixelated to me. Oh and that framerate is nothing. I want 1000fps!

8K is the same number of pixels as sixteen 1080p screens. They probably should have left out the "and even as gaming screens" part. Laptop GPUs to game on that resolution are nowhere in sight for the foreseeable future.

No one says what kind of game. Maybe they talk about Need for Speed 3 with a Modern Patch I know that one runs easily in 4K at 200+ fps

But I agree with you. I honestly don't think I could tell the difference between a 4K laptop and a 8K laptop.

You know it seemed impressive until I realized that's below my phone's PPI. Droid Turbo Ballistic has 565 Pixels Per Inch
Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge has 577 PPI

Then you have to consider how far out we are from having machines capable of gaming at 8k and the fact this will likely price itself out of average income pockets and I'm going to have to go with meh.

Everyone has heard that samsung is currently working with the Korean government and (11?) other companies on an 11k cellphone screen correct? It should be at trade shows in 2017.

This screen? Seems pointless to me when most laptops don't even have 1080P.

I just calculated my main monitor ppi... and it's ~82. And it's completely OK for desktop usage. so why on earth would I want 6.243 x 6.243 => ~39 pixels inside my monitors curren 1 pixel? it would be nonsense. For mobile phone, that you keep like 3 times closer to your face usually... OK, maybe, but even there it's 2x overkill. If you put such PPI into your VR headset, there you could actually want even better PPI though. But I don't see any reasonable scenario, where you are looking 17.3" screen from 15-20cm away.

Human eye cannot resolve more than what we have now anyway. 1080P on a 5" screen has already surpassed that. 4k on a 50" (at normal viewing distance) does the same. That being said Samsungs 11k phone screen rumors an almost 3d like experience.
