My question is as above. I wonder if the 4790k is still worth it as of now but the price would be close to retail price at best it would maybe $us30 cheaper in my place I live in for reference than retail.

I have been building my pc up slowly parts by parts over the months planning to max the z97 platform starting with the cheapest part. Right now I see for this late of a time 4790k looks rather dated, my plan for a broadwell on z97 never came out. Should I just stick with what I have now and just use the money saved for the new platform later? It is quite a waste for my ddr3 modules though.

This is a hypothetical question as of now I could not buy anything yet. I don't think there is good second hand market in my area for 4790k if you suggest that. Most likely if there was it would not be much lower in price.

4790K is a capable CPU, yes. Z170-based boards offer better things than Z97. That's about all the difference. If you plan for high-speed storage and multiple graphics cards, Z170 would be the way to go, however. Those two things don't have much to do with the CPU itself.

I see. I am just looking at cpu performance only though. A z170 would mean another reinvestment into a newer board as well as for ddr4. I realised again pc stuff is never stood still. sigh..

for CPU performance only, 4790K is pretty much equal to 6700K, clock-for-clock. 6700K takes the advantage only with high-clocked DDR4 to support it.

It's absolutely still viable for a gaming build.
I wouldn't pay more than $300 for an i7 4790k though..They're everywhere for cheap right now..boards too.
Get them before they go back up ;)
Latency on ddr3 is lower than ddr4, too.
was messing around yesterday...max RTL was 36 on ddr3.
On my crappy (daily) ddr4 it's 57 with as much tightening as it will take and still be stable.

Sigh..if there are cheap places to get one in my area. Have not come across one yet. All I see is new 4790k in boxes or people selling their 4790k as a whole pc at a not so low price. I do wonder how well the later manufactured 4790k perform in overclock being at the most matured of 22nm process, those that are still recently out made 4790k I mean.

mine ticks along in every day use quite nicely at 4.6 with 1.28 vcore.. built just before skylake arrived.. technically an out dated platform but only technically.. it performs well enough.. :)

There is much better than my current pentium which requires even more voltage to be stable at 4.4 at a whopping 1.38 vcore. I guess 4790k is still very feasible now just the downside is the price, it is much cheaper than a skylake though.

If your interested, I am about to move (back) to X99 next week. I will have a 4790k, Asus Z97-WS (awesome board with gen3 plx chips allowing full use of PCIe lanes for multi gpu, and can have x2 m.2), Plextor m6e M.2, and 4 x 8GB Corsair vengeance (gold to match MB) that will be available.

I recently sold that CPU and I think it is still a great chip, specially for media consumer/gaming pc.

Certainly go for the 4790K if you feel ok with the price tag. The advantages of the 10 series platform lies purely with DDR4 and more recent, faster storage protocols. I can't guarantee that you'll end up on top of the silicon lottery, but there's so much flexibility in a 4790K. All the threads you need, and 4.4GHz is there for your single threaded games even without OC, while (depending on the quality of your chip) 3.3-3.5GHz with undervolting can get you a great 4C/8T CPU to fit in SFF/uSFF applications that require minimal heat and power consumption.

Whatever you do, I wouldn't be staying with a G3258. When not used to save money, it's more of a "fun-factor" CPU than one that you rely on to get you through whatever demanding workloads come your way in the next few years.

Thanks. I see your point. I guess it'll be 4790k for me then, I never expected to be entrenched in this platform. Yes i don't expect much for the silicon lottery but for 22nm to be this long there is a good chance most silicon for the 4790k is good. Small form factor for a 4790k with undervolting? Interesting.

I am past the point of "fun-factor" for the G3258 it was a good learning tool for overclocking and playing around without risking much money as well as it money saving. I am hitting demanding workload already and realised it does not quite suffice coming from a slow laptop to a G3528 was a leap to me.

Usually I buy pc stuff overseas but right now I have to go with my local retailer as exchange rates are not to my favour. Getting a 4790k for a lower price would mean a motherboard + cpu bundle. Maybe sff for the G3258?

PS : I have learned alot of thing from this forum. Usually before that I never joined any sites but just lurked around forums.

The 4790k will continue to be a very capable chip for years to come, unless your "demanding workload" involves a lot of work that would make use of >4 cores. And by that I'm not saying the 4790k won't be a good chip, but there will be better available. I know a 4790k would be a welcome upgrade for the stuff I've been doing recently... but it would just make encodes quicker, and by how much, I don't really know. Pretty moot point for me. I'm not on a schedule or anything.

If I had known that you would've wanted a motherboard/CPU combo, I would've suggested you move to Z170 and buy a good 16GB kit of DDR4, since the 4790K prices are not pretty. Then again, to have 32GB of DDR3 go to waste/go to a G3258 seems wasteful.

In my place pc stuff is price funny. A 4790k by itself cost more than a cheapo H81 board with 4790k bundle. Yes the ram would be a waste :( Broadwell don't came out well like my board don't support it and it overclock potential is abysmal. It seems like a good move would be to sell my pc but I may have to take a hit. It is matter of price now. I would not be here if pricing was very low as that would be obvious. It just highlight that long-term plan in pc in not an obvious thing. Sticking on looks like the best thing cost wise though currently.
