Howdy lads,

Not long ago I was asking what to get in the GPU market and I decided I would wait for the latest and greatest GPU's but my itch is getting a lil extreme!

Right now though I'm considering the MSI GTX 980 Ti Armor GPU for 685 Euro or the AMD R9 Nano for 517 euro. I'm just not too impressed with the benchmarks that i've seen to be bothered in buying the Nvidia card :/

The Price and size is awesome on the Nano but I just can't make up my damn mind!!

If yee were to buy this card for 1080p/1440p gaming... which would yee lads go for?

I would much prefer to save me money so that's why that Nano is quite interesting ^^

The 980 Ti is noticeably faster at those resolutions going by the benches done here

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/R9_Nano/30.html

but it depends on how you're looking at this. The 980 Ti is about 33% more expensive but doesn't give 33% more performance. If you want bang for your buck then take the Nano. If you want the best single GPU available then pay the extra for the 980 Ti. I will say I like the 980 Ti for 1440p gaming.

But I am very interested in the better Bang for your buck! Much better value and still performs well in all benchmarks that I've seen.

Well heres my opinion thrown into the mix:

You are looking at 1440p it looks like correct at the highest. Well in that regard, most of the card in the lineup will handle it no problem. The strongest card in the lineup is the GTX 980ti and its the best gaming video card available right now so if your flat looking for strength it is the best option. That being said, its price to performance is not as good as many others in the lineup and you could get a better value out of other cards. Take for example the R9 Nano, it is basically a full Fury X with slight clock reductions which can be over written and increased back to Fury X levels making it a pretty good value for the price its at right now (About high end GTX 980 territory). If you want pure performance and a better value, that's the card to get right now as it offers a great value for its performance.

So in short:
I would get the GTX 980ti if I was shooting for the best
or
I would get the R9 Nano if I wanted to get a better price to performance on the high side.

I believe for you the Nano might be a better option since you seem to be trying to go for a better value from what you have said.

We are talking about 120%-126% performance at 1440p on this chart for a Nano especially if you clock it back up to Fury X levels.

@xfia I won't be buying a multi monitor setup but I really do intend on getting a VR set once it comes round too ^^

@GhostRyder You've pretty much said and shown what I'm thinking :p I really do like the sounds of the Nano simply for better bang for me buck and I really like the power consumption and size too!
I didn't how ever realise that I can somehow get the Fury X speeds going?? How?! Is that some sort of Vbios Flash? That makes this card even more interesting to me right now :L
I mean.. for a little over 500 bucks I just can't see why I shouldn't be picking this up! :p

Bang for buck matters when on tight budget, and you need a GPU that can deliver the max performance for your money.
In this case i guess anything below 280X ( i got the Vapor Sapphire OCed Version) is not worth it.
1080p with my 280x is preety solid in every game i want to play.
Havent tried 1440 but i guess it will be preety good at it as well.
My recommendation are 290x, 390x, 970, 980, 780ti, or Nano.

Just up the Voltage allowance and put it at 1050mhz and you have a Fury X. That being said however its still up to the lottery on overclocking (Though everyone I have met is able to at least hit 1050mhz on the Nano that owns one). The nano is a Full fledged Fury X GPU just clocked down 50mhz with some power savings because of binning and voltage limiter. You can override it a bit and allow it to hit those levels but your not going to exceed the max overclock of a Fury X with a Nano.

I am looking to possibly get a Nano as well to put in my portable machine.

@Irish_PXzyan bear in mind though that significant overclocking isn't guaranteed. The Nano that W1zzard sampled could clock up to 1060 MHz but the Fury X could be overclocked to 1150 MHz and that makes sense due to the superior cooler on the Fury X.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/R9_Nano/34.html

and a 980 Ti can also be overclocked. I still think the Nano would be the best bang for your buck since the significant price reduction on the Nano though.

what happens when you go extreme multi monitor and the rift? when latency matters.. when raw bandwidth counts..

As OP stated - not going that course however, to quote the article you've kindly linked:

a build with the intent to run either three AMD Fury X cards or three GTX 980 Ti cards is a fruitless gesture. Just don't do it.

Although AMD Fury X outperforms 980ti at tri-card set ups, the gain in FPS isn't worth it at all. If you're not looking to overclock, I'd bypass the Nano and get a Fury X. If you do overclock, get a 980ti. If you go dual cards, get Fury X. Or wait for the dual Nano style card.

i think fiji gpu's will prob be the best for rift.. actually better to have crossfire then you can take advantage of keeping that ultra low latency design at work with split frame rendering.

real performance gain comes from a second gpu.. there is much more to be said for buying a used mid range gpu and overclocking it than there is to be said about overclocking top tier.

I wont recomend multi gpu config since the problems that come with it.
Mostly top tier gpus will do just fine on 1440 and 1080 as well.
Geting a Fury X or a 390x is mostly enought for it.
980 and 980ti as well.
I guess Titan is out of the question since it is HEAVY on the price.
However i would recommend a 295 x2 since it kick the ass of all above recommended gpus, and it might not be that expensive.

So the Nano would be the better choice for VR? Potentially at least?

Well let me say lads that I've made up my mind and ended up buying the AMD R9 Nano for 517 euro :) I am very happy now and excited :p

Thanks for all your help lads you've all helped to make up my mind ^^

When VR pops out, I might keep an eye open for a second hand R9 Nano and crossfire them up ^^

Honestly, I would not sink too much money in the top-end cards right now. Worst time to be doing this with 14/16nm right at our doorstep.

The resale value of these cards will drop halfway 2016, and it will drop dramatically. Performance increases have stalled ever since Kepler.

Similarly, I would not even consider investing into VR right now, content is scarce and there is no finalized product on the market. Hence my vote goes to a R9 390X but even that is an unnecessary investment. For as much as 250 EUR you can pick up second hand 780ti, for 50 EUR more you've got a GTX 970. Perfect performance level for now, enough to hold you through 2016.

nano crossfire would be pretty ideal imo.. my vote was for a fury but ill change because the price performance and power consumption is great.

So the Nano would be the better choice for VR? Potentially at least?

Well let me say lads that I've made up my mind and ended up buying the AMD R9 Nano for 517 euro :) I am very happy now and excited :p

Thanks for all your help lads you've all helped to make up my mind ^^

When VR pops out, I might keep an eye open for a second hand R9 Nano and crossfire them up ^^
Well VR is still very early but AMD has been touting it a lot and focusing on so by the way things have been going it will be great (Including a few Demos and such showing it). You will probably need two GPU's if you want to do heavy VR in the future.

Glad you got yourself a card. Hope you enjoy it!

980 Ti. Easy choice. ;)

If you can wait however, Pascal is only around 2 months away and the performance improvement is going to be large.

Shame on you - should have read the thread - he's already ordered the Nano.

It's been speculated by a certain site. However, it's unlikely. Then again, CD at S|A says Nvidia has nothing and he's so good at being wrong maybe Pascal is closer than we think.
