GTX-980ti Freezes while Gaming

OK I tried to figure this one out but somehow I'm stumped. Card in question is in my SPECS. So every time I start a game (I only play FFXIV or Armored Warfare) and within 5 minutes the game would freeze :wtf:

but after a restart t won't do it again as if nothing is wrong. I've read that the DX11 client on FFXIV might be the culprit but it also does the same thing on AW. I have the latest drivers installed btw if anyone wants to know

. I will post a screenshot of Windows event viewer later to see if there could be something in there.

Edit: system in SPECS is all stock btw and the GPU has stock OC.

It does sound a tad driver related if it behaves normally after a restart. Running latest drivers? Usual culprits of game updates or what have you?

Also, is it a new problem that just appeared or is it a new card, i.e. what coincides with the new problems?

CPU temp hovers between 45-50 and GPU never goes over 60 on auto fan speed setting

Latest drivers are installed. Had the same problem with a GTX-970 awhile back before I upgraded. I can throw in a GTX-770 and not have the same issue (running FFXIV at least). So it could be GPU related or drivers like you said

Could be a problem with the PSU or motherboard. Does it happen in other games too?

Here is a screenshot of event viewer after I restarted. Judging by the looks of it, I cannot find the culprit. The Critical event was when I restarted after it froze again.

It does it on both FFXIV HW and Armored Warfare

Yeah I know, please try other games too, so that I can be sure what it is and what not. If it's doing this in all games, it's more likely a hardware problem and I don't think it's the GPU because it works sometimes normal, as you explained. I would bet on PSU/mainboard then. Can you try another PSU first?

Not all drivers work on all configurations.

I haven't played either game (don't own them), but I haven't had issues with games on my 980Ti with drivers (currently using) 361.43 and 359.06. Perhaps give one of those a try and see how it works out.

try disabling some background software like malware bytes and see what happens. If it still crashes, reinsert GPU or try a different slot. Another thing might be the RAM. Did you install new RAM? Is there a new external HDD (one that uses USB power) you installed recently, I recommend to pull it out since it may cause static within the board.

I don't think its any of what you folks are concerned about. Remember the games run fine after I restart from when it initially crashed. I'm suspecting its something within windows (Readyboot/Readyboost perhaps?). So basically it crashes within the first 5 minutes of me gaming, once I restart it-it runs like nothing happened earlier. Will swap my trusty GTX-660ti to see if it does the same thing with Kepler based cards. I know that it does it with this 980ti and a 970 that I upgraded from (it could be Maxwell related :confused:

i remember that i had the exact problem on core 2 quad 9550, it bothered me for days until i realized that i had to up the vcore voltage
due to long overclocking exposure, exact situation first freeze then i restart and the everything was normal...
is your cpu overclocked? or any other component?

I am about to try that since it did it with 2 cards the come OC from factory. I might try to down clocking to stock vanilla 980ti clocks to see if that fixes the issue

You could try forcing clocks and voltage on the card to see if it ever occurs again just to rule out its a voltage or power saving issue.

haha okay, I don't see what's the problem in testing some other games to be exactly shure, but have it your way then. Tell us what happened with the 660 Ti in, that will maybe lead us to the solution.

I don't either but I will get to it eventually. It does it with Armored Warfare as well so it's not just narrowed to a certain title.

UPDATE: Clean installing Windows 10 I believe fixed all the issues.
