Well iv gone and bought myself a second:
http://www.computerlounge.co.nz/components/componentview.asp?partid=21538
Now everything is working fine, except connecting it i had to use a display port plug and a hdmi plug.

The DP monitor is working perfectly. The HDMI monitor has a yellowy white and is laggy as all hell. Any tips on getting the two monitors running nicely?

I have found the specs of the dp and hdmi running as follows:
Display port
3840x2160
133.3kHz 60Hz

HDMI
3840x2160
67.4kHz 30Hz

Is it just the fact of hdmi being worse that display port?

Thanks for any help

HDMI doesn't have enough bandwidth for 4K. As you already discovered, it's limited to 30 Hz. You need 1 Display Port per 4K display to get 60 Hz (that's assuming the monitor can handle it).

Edit: Monitor specs: Supports HDMI 1.4 (3840 x 2160, 30Hz) and Display Port 1.2 (3840 x 2160, 60Hz)

As you can see from Ford's post, there's nothing you can do about this. Unfortunately, your only option is to either live with it, or buy a monitor with dual DisplayPort or a HDMI 1.4 port. Your graphics card has to be able to drive this too, of course (HDMI 1.4) but I'm not sure off the top of my head whether a 780 Ti will.

It might be possible to get a DisplayPort switch and manually switch over yourself, but that's a workaround at best.

Your best option without dropping lots of money would be to drop the HDMI display to 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz. You could try 2560 x 1600 @ 60 Hz but it might not look so good because of awkward stretching.

or a HDMI 1.4 port.
HDMI 1.4 alone doesn't support 4k. If he's getting 4k and 24Hz or 30Hz, then he probably already is using HDMI 1.4 as it is HDMI 2.0 that's going to allow for 4k @ 60Hz. Earlier revisions of HDMI can't do 4k at all. To get 60Hz on 4k requires DisplayPort.

Thanks for the clarification. :) I may have been confusing it with dual HDMI ports perhaps? Or was that dual DVI?

Effectively the same. The packet structure for both interfaces is identical. Dual link DVI-D has the same 2560 x 1600 @ 60 Hz limit.

Yes indeed, I know. However, the ports are often rated at different capabilities - with DVI having a wider range - despite this and hence the distinction.

Thanks for the help people. Since im running a dual gpu set up what would happen if i removed the sli bridge and run each monitor of each gpu? That way i could get a dp for each monitor lol. But im not too sure how that would work or if it would work. THis entire realm of 4k and multi monitor is rather new to me.

Well, by removing the SLI bridge you of course lose the SLI function and you should be able to run more monitors. AFAIK, while a 780 Ti has 4 video connectors, only two can function at any one time. With two cards you could therefore connect up to 4 monitors, with 2 connected to each card. You'll be able to tell they work when you connect them, because the NVIDIA driver will detect it in real time and will show up in the NVIDIA control panel.

I'd just love to see the kind of load four 4K monitors would put on the poor GPUs.

It should work fine but running a game at 4K would be nigh impossible without SLI (unless you like solitaire). If you don't run games on that second monitor, maybe it would better to install a third video card (doesn't have to be high end) for 4K 2D stuff.

Not enough for 60 Hz.

Monitor 1:
3840x2160 @30hz 38%

Monitor 2:
3840x2160 @30hz 38%
3840x2160 @30hz 38%

Total: 152% and cannot exceed 100% or that second display will go off. 2 x 4K @ 60 Hz is more than a single DisplayPort can handle.

i only require 1x display port lead to run a monitor. So in theory shouldn't i be able to run games at approx 40fps (like i use to with only one gpu)

Cheers

If you take them out of SLI, you'll have one monitor per card so your frame rate would likely drop by 30-50%. No harm in trying it because you can always put it back if you find it unacceptable.

The alternative would be to keep it in SLI and plug the secondary display into HDMI setting it to 1920x1080 or 2560x1600 @ 60 Hz.

@Nossy I'm curious, is it possible for you to use DSR with your 4K monitor and get a virtual resolution of 7680 x 4320?

Iv never actually heard of a DSR sorry. Iv just hooked up the second monitor as a 2560 x 1440 60hz. seems to be doing the trick but not what i wanted.

DSR is a fairly new feature from NVIDIA that allows the GPU to work with a higher resolution than what's displayed on the screen. You can get to it in the 3D settings of the NVIDIA driver control panel. Select a 4x DSR factor. I'm really curious to know if it will allow such a resolution.

Here's a full explanation of what DSR is: www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/technology/dsr/technology
