actually, that card outperforms the 4870x2 in reveiws ive seen, and takes the crown for the fastest. where do i get this when the 4870x2 is 3% higher than the 4850x2 overall? because it is right:
in 1680x1050, the 4850x2 outperforms by 1% in 1680x1050 and 2% in 1920x1200. Let me know if you have this card and am running any game under 1680, so i can buy you a helmet, it is required apparel on the short bus.

You can get two 4850 for 132.00 each after rebates. Yes their cooler sucks but man for the giant difference you could buy after market coolers and be way ahead; or at that price buy a 280gtx for 359.00 and save 70.00 to 80.00 dollars. You don't have to put up with a multi gpu card driver support and only lose 6 to 8 percent in performance when crossfire is available and when it's not a 280gtx would kill this card.

I've been toying with that idea. Actually, toying more with getting the GTX260 216, overclock it and it is at gtx280 levels.

Part of me doesn't want to mess with dual cards again. Too little room, too much heat, too much PITA in my rig. Another part of me wants to leave it open so that would preclude Nvidia.

Too pricey without a doubt, in the UK it's more expensive than many 280's and is only £20 cheaper than some 4870x2's......as some have said, even in the UK, two single 4850's are MUCH cheaper, in fact for the price Scan UK are going to charge for the thing, you could get two 4850's plus a decent PSU or 2Gigs of high quality DDR2.

How much can you get 2 1gb cards for, though? If you want to go quad crossfire with the 4850s (oddly) but don't want to buy a tri/quad slot board, you actually save with it.

Ooh. It's $399.99 now, too! :D

The palit 4850 has their tried and trusted aftermarket Zalman type cooler, in the UK they are no more expensive than most other brands, i still think I might go for two of these and see what they can do together :)

hey thats a point.....do P45's take 3 cards? wonder what 3 decent palit 4670's would go like?

In my case, even though i game at 1920 x 1200 i really dont want the 1gig versions, which as you rightly point out can cost a fair bit more, the 512MB versions actually perform well at high res but for me with a 32bit OS....two 1GB cards mean that my 4GB ram become less than 2

To me the 4000 series x2 are way overpriced. Because look 1 4850 is 125 bucks. And a 4850x2 is 429??? WTF and BTW 2 x 4850 beats the 4850x2 anyways. And congrats u saved $175. I think it's priced like that just because some people want to squeeze out every bit of performance of the card.

for a 4850 to be that low its gotta be after rebate or on sale or open box,

heck the 100-125 range is for the 4830.

is there a reason why only one company is making the 4850x2?

I'm as ignorant on the subject of exactly why there are no other designs for a 4850x2. The obvious is that sapphire was the only company that really put the time/effort into it. I know that isn't a reason, but nobody else stepped up. That's just how it is.

probably the same reason why there is only 1 2gb 4850.

I don't think Sapphire was the only AIB interested in the 4850x2. Usually when an AIB wants to release something new ATI doesnt mention anything about it. For example the 3850x2 and x3 from Asus, ATI made no mention of those products and Asus was alone to market the cards.

For the 4850x2 ATI/AMD announced the card in the press they mad a bunch of noise about it close to the 4870x2 launch date and then never backed it up. I honestly believe the performance of the 4850x2 is so close to the 4870x2 that ATI was simply protecting their margins.... why would they undercut their leading product?

I was disappointed in September when I realized ATI would be making a mistake to really release the 4850x2 and do it justice. As it stands the only 4850x2 available is a borderline novelty product with a loud fan and 4 display ports ,real gamers dont need 4 display ports...

In conclusion ATI pulled the plug on the 4850x2 IMO

Just my 2c

The 4850x2 performed as well if not better than it's big brother in a myriad of tests, synthetic, and in game. I wouldn't call that a novelty. Especially at $28x.xx

yea it would be possible why they pulled the plug on it, no the 2gb 4850 shouldn't be lumped in the same category but both have things that screw it up, 4850 2gb not wide enough bus, 4850x2 too dang close to 4870x2, and kills any potential sales of the 4870x2, still 4870's are already getting low in price.
