My 4870 just arrived today and I'm also a very disappointed, I reinstalled Vista just to be sure, as my as card was nvidia and I'm getting the same sort of performance that I got from my old card (8800GT)

On erocker's thread he got ~45FPS on Crysis on high at 1680x1050

And I only get ~29FPS

WTF!!!

I'm using the 8.6 hotfix drivers and I'm feeling a bit gutted ATM, feel like I've wasted £200 :(

Am I doing something wrong?????

He has a quad and far better RAM: that might explain it. It's possible that there's something else as well: dunno :(

Crysis isn't multi-threaded so it can't be his quad. I doubt RAM can has that much effect on FPS.

I'm stumped...

Ram helps alittle bit, i got about 4fps more with an extra 2gb. Not much, and not really worth it. But i did a test with 4gb and 6gb.

Do you have the settings set for "Performance"? Use the slider on the first tab of "3D" seetings to "performance", you should see a significant boost in FPS.:toast:

3.4GHz on your E6600 doesn't help matters either.

Do you think I should try and OC my CPU further?

EDIT: tried Ocing more but I think I'm on the edge of stablilty as I am now because it wont go any further.

Is there a bottleneck somewhere or is my PC just being a POS?

Frankly, I'm a little surpised your G0 E6600 can't go higher on an P35 chipset. My old 975x board got my B3 E6600 to 3.8GHz. Maybe it's in the cooling...400MHz does count for a bit, but not the deficit I see in that bench.

I'm as confused as you as to why your FPS went down when you enabled the "Performance" settings in CCC...

Do you have a link to the post that erocker's score came from? Maybe we're comparing apples to oranges if there is another card in the mix or something.

Oh yeah, I had 1.6V in BIOS going into mine.

I'm almost sure the quad is helping those scores, but I've been wrong before...

Benchmark Scores It does boot up? I think.
Maybe it's stuck at 2D clocks?
Launch RivaTuner and open Hardware monitor tab. Then run the bench.

anyway , i actually score higher than erocker does

problem is that i scored almost the same with my overclocked 8800GT.

RivaTuner doesn't work with the 4800 series, but using the monitoring tab in GPUz, it is working at 3D clocks in 3D apps.

I'm considering re-installing vista AGAIN, but I doubt that'll help. I'm stuck for ideas.

dont bother the vista reinastalling thingy it cant help besides u have done it once already.

just so u know i ran the test with my Q6700 running at 3.2Ghz. and the 4870 overclocked to run at 780/1100. Driver 8.6 hotfix form erockers link.

i have accepted the fact that the card is NOT just as great as we all thought. well ofc that depends on what you are upgrading from, right? I have however decided to keep it and wait for good drivers and i will eventually run crosssfire.

I don't know why people are comparing Crysis to begin with, it's a severely flawed game. Everyone having problems are all of your drivers up to date? (not just video card) Are your PSU's stable/powerful enough? Honestly, I installed my card, installed catalyst 8.6 hotfix drivers and I was good to go. If things aren't working with your new card and you've "tried everything" pertaining to the installation of your new card, perhaps it's time to step back and make sure the rest of your system is stable. On the other hand perhaps it IS ATi's drivers not working well with your particular hardware setup. (though unlikely) Well, this is the small price to pay when jumping onbaord with a new card in it's early stages. There isn't even a "proper" driver for these cards yet! So, for now, keep fighting, give feedback to AMD since this is the only way they know what problems there are with certain configurations. The new drivers will be here any day. I've been using both my cards and they have been performing wonderfully. I'm a completely satisfied customer.

*btw, this isn't in response to any particular post.

in crysis and 3dmark06 it's not but in other thing it is. Shoot my 3870x2 kills my 4870 in 3dmark06 but not in other things.

here is my 3dmark06 score with a 9800gtx and 4870

got my 4870 today, installed 8.7 beta drivers, overclocked it to core 780 and memory 1100mhz excitedly ran my ususal benchmarks -

3Dmark06- my score has fallen 600 points from my 8800GT overclocked scores.
Crysis benchmark has fallen 1 FPS too
Age o Conan no noticable change

finally it it got to up to 81 C my 8800GT never got pat 61 C

what is the problem, i am soo pissed i am almost going to put my 8800GT back.:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

i am soo angry i am going to take a midday nap. i will try the other driver versions when i wake up but even then this is diappointing.

this is not a bench where the 4870 does well yet it matches a 9800gtx no problem

here they are head to head with cpus clocked a similar speeds, with the 9800gtx at it's max overclock and the 4870 only using overdrive and the 9800gtx has it's cpu clocked about 50 mghz faster.

Also the 9800 gtx has very mature drivers and the 4870 doesn't. I understand your concern I am thinking of keeping my 8800gts that I bought to sell on ebay for 119.00 and send my 4870 back. I ,like you, think the fan fix is a pain and that 4870 isn't all that much more powerfull than the 8800 gts. I might keep the 200.00 difference for a bigger hardrive and keep the 8800gts, yet I cannot add a second 8800gts to this motherboard , but I can added a second 4870.

Well I'm not sure what's going on with your system to be honest. I have a far less superior system than you and I'm hitting those frame rates and better!

I will tell you one thing I did that gave me 40+ fps in a lost coast. I downgraded my system to Vista 32bit. I went from 52fps in 64bit to 97fps in 32bit. But like I said my system sucks compared to yours. Something to think about.

Also have you tweaked the OS and such? Remember when you reinstall an OS there is a lot of crap running you don't need. Between that and properly setting up your catalyst can make a HUGE difference!

If you would like I can give you some links to some great guides. :toast:

Strange thing about the 32 and 64 bit lost coast situation. Might be unoptimised drivers.

I'll be tweaking my OS 2night using blackviper's service tweaks guide. I've tried a few different settings on CCC but to no avail.

I'll keep you all updated and hopefully I can get this card working at it's full potential because at the moment it's barely an upgrade coming from my 8800GT.

Software Windows 11
Strange thing about the 32 and 64 bit lost coast situation. Might be unoptimised drivers.

I'll be tweaking my OS 2night using blackviper's service tweaks guide. I've tried a few different settings on CCC but to no avail.

I'll keep you all updated and hopefully I can get this card working at it's full potential because at the moment it's barely an upgrade coming from my 8800GT.

:toast:

Thing is it should be an upgrade coming from an 8800GT. Have you filed anything with AMD about your situation?
