ok i have 2 4890s the one is a visiontek that comes with aftermarket cooler the other is a sapphire with a stock cooler the one with a stock cooler the fan is grinding and is really bad so i took it out no just running one card i took off stock heatsink and im thinking about liquid or a aftermarket cooler and i have memsinks that i know will work but i have some vrm coolers but idk if they are enough to cool the VRM on the 4890

    heres what i got

    VRM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835708011

I would get one of these. Cheap and very effective.

I strongly recommend trying this http://www.zalman.com/ENG/product/Product_Read.asp?idx=352

and btw the way I solved the cooling on my 4870 (they should be the same from this point of view) was removing the bloody fan from the card, leaving the red metal plate on, and then attaching Accelero S1 rev2. Works like a charm.

edit: damnit, DarkEgo beat me :) Damn links I skipped :)

Thumbs up for Zalman for opting a real thermal paste and not some crappy thermal insulation tape/pad as the TIM on that 4870/90 VRM sink.
