You have an HD4890? Just read a few posts back. Awesome. Congrats on the new purchase.

Your disk drivers are probably just Catalyst 9.3s with added HD4890 support. Few extra lines in the .inf file. No biggie...

If you get a chance could you post up some GPU-Z (Sensor Tab) shots during 2D IDLE and 3D LOAD? Specifically of the VDDC. I'm interested in what the voltage is during 2D IDLE. I know it's 1.312v at 3D LOAD...

Several high-end cards from Sapphire come with it (HD4850X2 and HD4870X2 come to mind here, mine sure did).

ccc auto tune set my card @970mhz/1055mhz and caused artifacts...

i had to set 940mhz core(very dissapointed)/1100mhz mem to get crysis 100% stable...

crysis warhead is ''far'' more fluid than my old 4870 crossfire setup, even though i'm only getting 20-41fps....possibly the 1gb frame buffer as opposed to the 512 on my old 4870's is making it 'feel' this way....

I wouldnt worry, soon as the software for voltage adjustments is available you should get much better overclocks :)

I can't wait for their voltage control feature, no more BIOS editing. I think the big issue now is build quality, they really seem to depend when trying to break the 1GHz barrier. I have high hopes for AMD and XFX by the time I see their 4890s come out, otherwise, I ain't buying. The feeling of an ATI card with a core clock of 1GHz would be awesome.

XFX HD4890s are already out. Unfortunately they're the same as every other HD4890 available right now.

Build quality isn't in play here yet, as far as OC'ing goes. It's just pure luck...

Looks like I can get my hands on the Sapphire model for 440.00 Aus dollars. I was considering a 4850x2 2GB but now I think one of these will do fine.... I can always pair it up with another one later down the track

youve used riva to softmod over 1.4 on the 4890..... congrats (how?)
or are you waiting for the updated version...

i havnt really given rivatuner as much credit as i should have. as the program is very well made,

i have been nothing but impressed when using it... still a couple of hours of research behind most it seems into the working of the program....

frustratingly i didnt add any volts to my 4870's due to some wierd c++error i encountered when trying to use and after correctly installing the voltera plugin(did my head in and i gave up rivatuner)....

but from the response this program gets its obviously quality and worth getting to grips with....

hopefully when/if the voltage tweak module is released for the 4890.

i'll be one of the first to get my tech hit from it....

i just gotta get this gpu at 1ghz.....
its even more important than than the wife and kids at this moment:slap:

no i have not recieved my card so i have not tried riva with it yet.
i'm more of a hardmod guy but i'v used riva to add volts to my 295 and gx2.
1g should be np with good cooling and some volts
from unwinder
Just edit RivaTuner.cfg and add RV790 PCI DeviceID (9460h) to RV770 line of [GPU_1002] section. This way you'll force to see it as old good RV770, the chips have similar architecture so it will work. This trick has been used in many 4890 reviews including Guru3D's one.
------
so it will look like this
RV770 = 9440h-9442h,944Ch,9460h

to use riva to add volts its very easy this on my gx2 but same way to use it for any card

this mod is not for air users over 1.17 - 1.19 its not the volts that keeps it from running higher clock so much as the temps
that said if you can understand my jibberish go for it

gx2 the old hard way lol ......riva
g98 gx2 owners dont feel left out in the cold
if you blow it up you went to far and were to greedy
stay under 1.20ish your ok watch temps
for water users?? see how it goes on temps as you put more in
easy guide for those in the know
safer then sliders(but just as dangeruos)
no testing yet on max clocks and temps.
make sure to enable the VT1103.DLL plugin

"click"
monitor window
set up
plug in
enable plug in VT1103.DLL
1
type in your distination in command prompt( in accessories)
cd c:\program files (x86)\rivatuner v2.22
2
rivatuner.exe /sd0 /ri0,70,1a /ri1,70,1a /ri2,70,1a /ri3,70,1a /sd1 /ri0,70,1a /ri1,70,1a /ri2,70,1a /ri3,70,1a
this action will poll regester

3
rivatuner.exe /sd0 /ri3,70,15 /ri3,70,16 /ri3,70,17 /ri3,70,18 /sd1 /ri3,70,15 /ri3,70,16 /ri3,70,17 /ri3,70,18

that done told me active reg line to change >16 because it matches the volts i read off the plug in(same 2d/3d clocks)

now we write to it with this command
rivatuner.exe /sd0 /wi3,70,16,3a /sd2 /wi3,70,16,3a
stock 1.15
3a=1.17
3b=1.19

up to 1.19 max should be ok for air
water idk

under testing now its ok for temps 1.19-1.20 so far
as you can see here i just copy and paste from a note pad file i save

evga gx2
"click"
monitor window
set up
plug in
enable plug in VT1103.DLL
vista
1 cd c:\program files (x86)\rivatuner v2.22

2 rivatuner.exe /sd0 /ri0,70,1a /ri1,70,1a /ri2,70,1a /ri3,70,1a /sd1 /ri0,70,1a /ri1,70,1a /ri2,70,1a /ri3,70,1a

3 rivatuner.exe /sd0 /ri3,70,15 /ri3,70,16 /ri3,70,17 /ri3,70,18 /sd1 /ri3,70,15 /ri3,70,16 /ri3,70,17 /ri3,70,18

evga reg c16 change to move volts

4 rivatuner.exe /sd0 /wi3,70,16,3a /sd2 /wi3,70,16,3a
vista

3A = 1.17v
3b = 1.19
3c = 1.20
3e = 1.23
3F = 1.24v
40 = 1.25v
41 = 1.26
42 = 1.27

dont ask how to set on start up you should not if you dont know how.
play it safe if you want to try

it should look more like this as you poll your 4890 regulaters thuo
"click"
monitor window
set up
plug in
enable plug in VT1165
vista
1 cd c:\program files (x86)\rivatuner v2.24(latest) hit enter

2 rivatuner.exe /sd0 /ri0,70,1a /ri1,70,1a /ri2,70,1a /ri3,70,1a hit enter read info
3 rivatuner.exe /sd0 /ri3,70,15 /ri3,70,16 /ri3,70,17 /ri3,70,18 hit enter read info
open a 3d app as to tell witch line to change using same approach as above,so if the 3d volts matches a line you chang that line for added 3d volts i dont have card so i cant tell you how yet
4 rivatuner.exe /sd0 /wi3,70,?,?
sry for the long ass post guys

You know I am kind of wishing I would have waited for the 4890. I sold my 2 water cooled 4870s (had 2 x 3870s). Instead I bought the GTX 295 which I am happy with ~ but I would love to crossfire the 4890s :laugh:

I wonder if someone can tell which is which and why? :p

Well, I'll tell you that lower one is higher specced card. Why? Same reason as HD4890 - more chips for voltage regulation (7 vs only 5 on above card) :D

Hey, I'm getting good at this picture looking ;) Now off to find a picture of "naked" ASUS card and compare to others.. to see if that "Voltage Tweak" is all marketing, or have they done some hardware changes as well..

No, if it does, it is still all fucked up.. Im using 182, and I still need to. It wont let me "Attach" the monitor unless it is in non "dual GPU mode" so I have to turn it off when I attach. When I do attach, it doesnt recognize the monitor correctly until I restart the computer, and only then can I set the monitor to 1920x1080

No, qubit, it isnt fixed.

It doesnt help that the damned interface you have to use for the Nvidia control panel is 6 years old, and doesnt supply you with any sort of advanced configuration, and some parts of it seem to just disappear, like custom resolutions or signal type, or if you try and set a custom resolution to do 1920x1080 without restarting, it sets it on your primary monitor, when I had the other monitor selected.
Nvidia software is all sorts of fucked up.

I'm sorry it's not working for you and I can imagine how annoying it is.

However, it is fixed, because it's something they enabled in their so-called Big Bang driver release a while back and I did see it work fine in SLI mode; I wasn't dreaming. Perhaps there's a driver corruption issue on your system?

Why don't you set up a completely clean OS install on another HD or partition and take it from there? Or perhaps do one of those driver detox routines and re-install it. I promise you the functionality is there. :)

It's marketing and added software. Same reference PCB design as the rest currently available.

All HD4890s right now have the functionality of software voltage adjustment, it's just that Asus is including that software with their higher-priced "Voltage Tweak" cards.

UPDATE: I couldn't wait any longer. I broke down and snapped up the Sapphire HD4890 from SuperBiiz/ewiz.com for $217 shipped. We'll find out soon enough what's up with the voltage tweaking (along with everything else), when it arrives...

This reminds me of the x1800xt vs x1900xtx overclock debate all over again. Below is the x1900xtx and x1800xt.

I wonder if someone can tell which is which and why? :p

top pic is actually of an X1800XL the X1800XT has 6 mosfets vs 5 on the XL and 7 on the X1900XTX

I still have my X1800XT to prove it even and that blank white square is where my 6th mosfet is fried from a piece of smoldering wood that hit it when my house burned down december of 2006. I can get it to boot and run 2d, but the instant I start a 3d app, it's artifact city.

At any rate the difference between the x1800 and the x1900 is far greater than the difference between the 4870 and 4890.

HD4890 had been for sale good 5 days prior to official release, but for 410$/310€ (in local currency). Today several shops have them for 330$/249€. I know, you think it's outrageous, but that's european prices, more so here in Croatia. And it's such a good price, that tomorrow I'm ordering one for sure!

P.S. Cheapest HD4870 (512MB) is 235$, and reference HD4870 with 1GB memory are 260$, just for comparision.. so it's pretty good price for a card that's been barely out for a few days..
