Tatty, I think you are under estimating the HD5770.
We say the HD5770 is on par with the HD4870 not because it is sometimes slower, because it is also some times as fast as the HD4890.

I dont think I am, the 5770 is an excellent card but does get beaten by the HD4870 in some things from what I have read, I dont doubt the cards worth, I just think that moving from a 4870 to a 5770 in performance terms is an exercise in spending money for diminishing returns, I would recommend to anyone to get a 4770 if they were moving from say a 4850 or a GTX250/9800GTX, I just think it's pricepoint is less appealing when there is less of a performance gain.

That said, i acknowledge the other strengths of the card, in fact i do really like them but how many people genuinely really spend money to get some energy saving with little performance upgrade (at least in some apps).

I think you guys are underestimating the 5770 . I have a Asus and with a minor tweak of voltage the core does 1000+ and the ram DDR5 5600+. If you buy a Asus or MSI card they both come with voltage control and when over clocked, which is also factory warrantied, they beat a 4870 hands down and match a 260 gtx 216. The overclocking takes about 20 seconds to accomplish and a chimp could do it. With the increased bandwidth at ddr5 5600+ and the core hitting 1000 on average these cards flat out fly. Also the 4870 has optimized drivers and the 5770 doesn't and has not reached it's full potential at all. With every driver release it will get faster.

Tom you old dislexic ex cop you :D .......... The OP dont overclock, my/our answers are in relation to him, not generally about the strengths of a great overclocking card. I see from your post also that you now have a trained chimp in your household, there aint no way you could have overclocked that on your own! :rockout:

X2

Besides if he sells the 4870 and buys a 5770 for $165 of less he is not going to be out much money at all.

Girth baby.

Left 4 Dead 2.. like silk. 4xaa 8xaf and every jacked to the max.

I can't even imagine how 1 5850 performs, let alone a 5970/5970... or xfire 5850's. The 5770 is better than decent thus far. GPU-z shows funky readings of 13.5mhz in 2d mode. have not looked around or even attempted to check temps and what not. This CCC is much different then Im used to working with.

Looks like the 5770 does very well for you shevanel. Hopefully my new 21.5" 1080p monitor comes in today (was supposed to be here on 4th.)

Anyways, your 9800 GT is running strong for me, along with my other 9800 GT (no SLi on my chipset, but you don't want to use SLi on Folding@Home anyway). :)

I just bought a second 5770 and it's the diamond version, so I will flash it with my Asus bios, and will let you know how two 5770 at 1000 core and DRR 5 5800 run. It should be similar to a 5870 but about 100.00 cheaper. I'm hoping the results are similar to a 4870 x2 with dx 11 and remember boys with the last driver release a 4870 x2 was matching or beating a 295 gtx.

Good choice

It would probably make more sense selling the 5770 you have then buying a single 5850.

Will cost less :D

Na two 5770 will kill a 5850 and be about the same price.
