Hello, So I just got my 5870 and got it set into my system, At the beginning everything went fine. I installed drivers and everything. After that I plugged in my second monitor. And the problem is that the screen is very dark, Like the brightness i all down. But no matter what I try and change the screen just won't change. It stays very dark which is annoying. I plugged it into the other DVI and it's all fine. Both monitors are very dark at the lower DVI and fine at the first one.
Is this a bad DVI output or are there serval other things that I could try before I try and return it?

If the DVI output was bad, I would expect no picture at all. I reckon it's a software problem.

Boot off your Windows 7 install disc* and see how the picture looks - bet you it's perfect.

*Any other disc, such as Linux etc that boots into a GUI of some sort is just as good.

So the windows boost screen if working fine as you said. Which I am happy for. However even after uinstalled the driver, The problem is still there in windows.
I suppose I could just back up my things and reformat tho.

Ya, I thought it was a software problem. A reformat should indeed fix it.

Make sure you're using the latest driver from AMD's site though. If you're not running it right now, try it before going to the trouble of a reformat.

actually i'm with your original idea, it sounds like a bad DVI port to me. one of those pins controls brightness, gamma and contrast... so yeah. could be bad.

if you want to rule out software, check if hte problem happens before windows has loaded. if you see the dark effect in the BIOS or POST screens... its hardware.

But Kofoed had a good display on the boot disc and continues to get a bad display in Windows, so how is that hardware?

I've looked up the DVI pinouts and I don't see a separate pin for controlling brightness in the digital domain - there's only data and clock pins as I expected.

You could try the version that came on the original setup disc, perhaps, for troubleshooting. You'd want to eventually use the latest one of course, though.

You might actually find it more convenient to try out your new Windows install on a separate hard disc first and then image it over the original one, once you know it's working properly.

Also, it's worth googling for the problem, to see if others have seen it and how they fixed it.

Well. I done the reformat and windows is running now. Both screen seems fine. I installed the catalyst version 10.3. Which is the version I was using before I got the new card. And all works well now.
So it might be a driver issue with the 10.5.

Anyways. Thanks for your help :)

Hey, glad to help, buddy. :toast:

As it's always best to use the latest drivers if possible, you might be up for installing Windows on a separate hard drive (disconnect the main one while installing, to prevent the boot sequences becoming integrated by the installer) and then installing the 10.5 driver to see what happens. No great urgency, though.

I think im just going to wait to version 10.6. As uinstalling the driver didn't actually remove the problem. And I don't feel like installing windows again already :p

EDIT: I already begun to benchmark it and so, and im very happy about that it turned out to be nothing seriousely as I've been waiting the whole weekend for the card to come :p Im also impressed that i havn't seen it over 60C yet. As my old 3870 easily was hanging at 80C. And ofcause the big performance difference is just lovely x).
