well tried card in another machine a dell dimension 5150 no sign of it crashing so far after 1 day of use just a shame the pentium d processor is a major bottleneck :(

ive taken the card back to the shop i got it from and explained the problem and its been sent back to the manufacturers so im stuck with my gtx 260 till then :(

if it worked in another machine the card itself is fine, my bet would be on bad power.

just because you have an 850W PSU doesnt mean its a good PSU - and you never specified its brand or model.

apparently ati are trying to find a fix or solution to the problem as a small percentage of there cards have been found to have this problem and they say a driver hotfix is in the works to fix this and the grey screen of death suffered by 5700 and 5800 users :)
but a shiny new 1 should be enough for me thats to say the manufacturers give me a new 1 lol

Grey screen of death is a different matter :shadedshu
When a card goes GSOD the screen goes grey with strips, and the fan (at lease for me) don't stays on Full.
Your card simply crashed :respect:

Strange issue! Are you using the latest drivers from AMD? You may want to look into Windows power management settings to make sure nothing is being shut down after 20 minutes.

I got some pics coming...

+1, make sure you got "ALL" of the power saving options. I thought I did too, then my HD started shutting off while I was playing games.
There is also an "advanced power savings" option inside power savings options.
You actually have to open your basic power saving option up, then look for the small link at the bottom that says "advanced power savings options" check them all.
sounds like sleep mode to me, or hibernate of some kind.
go max performance, no sleeps no hibernates.

Hello there mate,

Well, I have a 5850 xfx, and the card started to behave strangely from begining. POST used to take for 30 seconds or more, and card would sometimes refuse to "power up" and it fan would start blowing like mad. I'll mention that I'm using the Asus p5n-e sli board. You notice the pattern? :). I wont even mention advices I got from people "uuu, your psu is bad, lalala, bla bla". Why do people automatically blame poor psu? :p After some research, I've discovered that the problem is caused by a motherboard chipset. Aka, nvidia chipset on that board, kinda hate my ati card. I've addresed to asus, along with many other people. Soon, asus released a bios that fixes the issue. Post up is now normal, card works in every game. Tested it over 24 hours period, not a single problem. But, still, sometimes at boot, the card fan starts to blow like crazy, and the comp refuses to start. It happens rarely, but it happens. Anyway, I'll probably change board soon anyway... the point is, that particular chipset, p5n, has problems with new ati cards. There will probably be some new bios versions in the future that will fix the issue all the way, but I dont intend to wait that long. Anyway, I'm 99% sure your card is fine, but most likely, you might need new bios, or, new mainboard. Hope I helped:) (Sorry for the wall of text :p )

thank you so much for the reply i actually had thoughts of the motherboard not getting along with the card lol to think i coulda easily replaced the board in a day and now i gotta wait on my local store checking the card and sh*t :( but if i get a replacement and it does the same or i get the same card back and told its not broken (which would explain the dell working with it) then we will know for certain its the crappy board and ill get a rep, any ideas? not wanting to xfire.

You're welcome:) Hmm... there are many boards out there that will work fine... And not expensive. Do you wanna go for amd cpus? This is what I'm doing, I'll take probably an asus board, with intel chipset (most likely P55/iP55), and a nice core i5, maaaaybe i7. That should be a decent platform for anything, gaming or whatever you need. Nothing too fancy, nothing too expensive, but it will get the job done. And your card will work just fine with that components :p

the q9550 set me back over £200 so a new cpu just wouldnt be worth it so it will have to be an intel board i just wish they would hurry up and give me my card or a new card back lol
