I just wanted to post my thoughts, I know this has probably allready beed posted to death.

I was running 2x4870s in crossfire 512 meg versions for sometime now, and enjoyed those cards to death, but a chance came up for me to get my hands on a 5870 for a very good price $500 AU thats $100 of retail, So I have received my card and another is on the way soon.

I removed my crossfired 4870s and installed the 5870, then ran some benches, the first thing I noticed was the card was really quite, way quiter than my 4870s. I ran Vantage and 06 and received roughly 200 to 400 points less than my crossfired cards, that put a smile on my face, But what really did it for me was I played a few rounds of BFBC2, I put my AA up to 2x and received no lag, I then upped it to 4x, then x8 still smooth as silk, I then proceeeded to Turn HBAO on and still silky smooth.

While my old crossfire setup was a few hundred points faster in Vantage and 06, this 1 5870 is a lot quiter, cooler, and uses less power when idle, and pumps out the AA ect ect like no tomorrow, that is what has really impressed me. I cant wait to get my second card soon.

This card is a epic WIN.

I second that... I just did my first computer build this week and I have the HD 5870 and it's worth every penny! Now I just need to convice my wife that I need two of them to crossfire even though I wouldn't even touch their capabilities!!!:rockout:

I second that as well and if the rumors about the Nvidia having trouble with fabricating the new GPU's, then AMD stands to take some more market share and money. I hope ATI can fund AMD getting back on even grounds with Intel.

That wont happen unless if AMD can get their CPU division to Work Like their Video card division, Now if we could just get the software division to get their heads out of their asses and release some solid Catalyst Drivers. (No offense but the amt of troubles i've heard from users here is ridiculous especially when I have no trouble with them)

I got my hands on a 5870 Crossfire setup and it was running RE5 maxed at like 250FPS! Too bad it wasn't mine to keep :(

But yeah the 5850 and 5870 Kick ass!

Not really, FanATIcs do the same stuff, how nV is evil blah blah..

Honestly, AMD has really won me over this round, I've been nV since the X1900 series, which was an amazing card for sure, but nV was overall better.

I wanted to play AvP and Stalker: CoP in DX11, so I figured I might as well get it, especially with my Battlefield: Bad Company 2 pre-order waiting.

It's pretty much the same argument as if a airplane could take off from a conveyor belt.

I just hopped over to ATI from nVidia. They both make great products!

And, yes, the 58XX family does kick ass!

I thought i was just going to read something like, someones HD 5870 burned out and popped like a bomb.

But ya its a nice card, i might consider ditching the GTX 260's and loosining my slots up with just 1 HD 5870 and some dx11!

Well, a GTX295 is 2x 275's, and a 5870 keeps up with the 295, better with OCing.

I'd say get it.

Yeah, I'm hoping to be into CF 5770s soon for epic win as well.

Glad to see you like it, I've had 4870 512's in CF before and I can second the noise/heat output being worlds apart, and this card performs roughly how my GTX295 did too.

I'm also hankering for a second card, but I can't help but wonder how you scored one for $500 AUD, THE cheapest I've seen is $518 and they are always out of stock (msy.com.au)

You should overclock it for some free gains too, mine does 950/1250 on stock voltage, and I've boosted the fan a bit in MSI AB too to keep the temps around 55-60 during full load.

5870 is good enough to stand on its own without needing crossfire. You are doing the 5870 injustice by thinking that 1 is not enough. Of course, if you game at 1900X1280 then its different story.

The single HD5870 is more than enough for 1920*1200, IMO.

There's nothing I can't play at 1920*1200 with everything maxed out.

Yes there is.

Crysis: Warhead w/ 8xAA is not do-able on full enthusiast @ 1920x1200.
I want to see Crysis with no jaggies, right now I can run it at 2xAA average about 42FPS in game playing, but I want to see higher options.

Use a performance optimization mod. There are many available right now, which will give you a lot more performance and increase IQ at the same time.

You won't be able to do 8xAA, you'll do 4xAA with 50+ FPS with no problems.

Bah, optimization mods meh.

I want to see what the developers made, what they made, no mods. I'm sure they work, but I want to be able to do it with what Crytek made, vanilla.

You're assuming these mods are just castrating the image quality, but it's not true.

The guys who made these mods actually made significant performance optimizations without touching the rendering quality, and their technical knowledge led them to create a team that's making an independent game right now, with their very own engine. I don't remember the name but they appeared in XtremeSystems about a year ago, talking about the project.

The problem with crysis is that it rushed to market and became too much of a spec sheet at launch, and it even happened with warhead as well. The engine is still "limitless" but the DX10 path was too rushed and unoptimized, and the DX9 compatibility screwed the game a little bit.

Crysis 2 should offer better looks and a lot more performance with our cards.

I'm really tossing around getting one of these cards...I do have $50 in my PP account to soften the blow, but am not sure which card to get atm. Though I would prefer a good warranty if not lifetime, so I'm tossing around one of these two:

Plain Jane XFX - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150443

Possibly better cooler XFX - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150476

I'm kinda leaning towards the 2nd XFX, the cooler apears to be similar to the Vapor X design, and I'm wondering if it's not a Zalman cooler in the first place. What do ya guys think? Also not sure about the price yet, but I could always do bill me later and do 2-3 payments before the 90 days is up and they start tacking on interest. I'm getting to the point where I want more performance at 1920x1080 w/aa and af. The 260's a solid card, and it's done quite well for the last 18+ months...but it's getting close to moving on. Still undecided if I want a 5850 or 5870, but I'm sure the 70 would last me a good bit longer, which would be a nice thing...trying to make my upgrades worth it for the long run these days...w/o multi-gpu.

I went threw the same thing as the original poster, I went from a 4850x2 to a 5850. its quieter, smoother, dont have to worry about crossfire working and I only lost a few hundered points in benches. the 5k series is amazing.
