66C load wtf??

Uhh... My processor was running at 66C after Orthos for 4 MINUTES. I stopped it before something melted...

It IS a prescott core, but this isn't normal?? I don't want to spend $50 on a cooler?? I certianly don't want to try to pop the IHS off...

Check for dust on the cooler and try to blow it away.
Do you have it OCed ? If so and if the temps continue drop it a bit.
Finally remove the cooler, check on the fan ( could be running on low rpm - If so remove the fan and get yourself another one ,they come really cheap ) and also re-apply new thermal paste on the cpu..Make sure to clear the old one.

I'm gonna get it re-seated today... not OC'd
I blow it out the best I can with a can of air but I don't think it does way too much...

This was dome with Speedfan, monitoring the temp... speedfan's known to be wrong

Yeah, you got 2 cores I got one, and you're overclocking, I'm not...
Everest reports 53C. Speedfan sucks. Everest and Orthos have my business from now on.
However, that does NOT explain sound corruption and that faint burning smell...

Everest reported something being 66C, it says AUX, I wonder what that is? Something in the power supply? A mosfet?

Either way, I go to my uncle's, who is a computer technition, with a problem, not 2...
SOund corruption... it happened on 2 different sets of speakers. Looks like I will be asking for one of his $2 sound cards, heh...

speedfan is completely customisable, and just about the best utility of its kind, what if everests wrong?

edit: try coretemp too, and pc wizard (and systool of course)

before this...i was using p4 3.2ht...idle temp is 58-59...load 70-75...no overclocking...besides...my room temp is 33 deg

Lol, 66*C is normal if your using a stock cooler.

AUX has something to do with graphics, afaik.

Yes it is the stock cooler. This does not explain my sound abnormalities, however. Bad sound chip? This motherboard is only 6 months old...

66*C can be normal, depending on your case and cooling fans.

My friends P4 Idles at 55*C.

My processor's load temperature is about 50ºC, but I have an after market cooler and so many fans my computer sounds like a vacuum cleaner. A friend of mine has the stock cooler on his Prescott, and it's load temperature is around 62ºC. Prescotts run hot, and the stock cooler is nothing spectacular, I don't think you should be too worried.

Im a prescott user too lol, although on a 775 package, idle temps are 37-44 c (37c = when ac unit is on lol) 44c when ac not runnin and just sitting at ambient temps of room, load temps 52-62c depends if im video encoding or playing a game

, although in the past I get the same temps as you are, sometimes even hotter idle at 60c and gaming at 90c!!! loollll there goes my mobo melted away, but the culprit was intels stock hsf push pin, it sucks!!! Re-sat it with AS5 and happly getting lower temps, everest and speed fan for me reports same temps....

Btw does core temp support us p4's 640? or even older p4's 3.0 and 3.2 775 and 478 package? I think it doesn't

I trust everest... load (orthos) for about 5 minutes reports 54C. I know it's not going to be my max temp, but that was all I needed to realize Speedfan sucks. I have 4 fans in my computer, 2 are in the power supply, one on the CPU and one on the Video Card... I keep the side off my case.

Maybe you got the settings for temps in speed fan wrong? It reports same as everest for me, and I have 2x 120 mm case fans a dual fan psu and ofcourse stock hsf for cpu and gpu, although it took me a while to set up fan speeds in speed fan

learning about its dividers and stuff... It works great if you can make tweak the settings right
