8 pin extender with 4 pin?

would it be safe to use an 8 pic exteneder with only the 4 pin connector that I need hooked up? would it work - I would ASSUME it would, but would prefer some extra feedback before I fire up the system in my new case.

So you just want to use 4 pins of the extender rather than all 8? I would think that would be ok.

Yes it would work but most boards will work with just the 4-pin hooked up, depending what the amps are on the 4-pin. There are some boards though that 100% require the 8-pin plug.

You might want to keep your eye on the wire if you try it. So if the wire looks cheap ( thin ) don't bother as it might get hot and melt the plastic.

Well the extender came with the cooler master case.... my board only requires a 4 pin... just didn't know if it would be a problem using the 8 pin with only half hooked up...

its fine to do it that way its not any different than the modular 8 pins on a PSU

The board is only a 4 pin so he will only be drawing what the board is designed to pull which shouldn't over draw the 4 pin

yeah the extra 4 wires wont be connected, so no extra power draw
