8800GT dead? (I don't think it's the 8800GT now)

So my brother suddenly couldn't play any of his games.

I checked his pc.
While Windows XP is loading during the black screen, it goes full of tiny artifacts but then windows loads with no artifacting and appears all normal.

In device manager, the 8800GT shows up with a yellow exclamation mark and it says "device cannot start". Even after uninstall/reinstall.

In dxdiag, it shows the card running on a 'generic driver'.
I reinstalled the driver but it still runs on the generic one.

I think it died. (Or could it be a faulty cable?)

Another thing... this card has a 10 year warranty which means it expires in 2017.

But... the manufacturer is BFG :laugh:

Yeah, that's a sign of a 8800 dying (the artifacts and driver recognition).
If the warranty is no longer honored, you could try to use your cooking skills to persuade the card back into it's original condition. *hint**hint*

Have you tried erockers full guide to reinstalling GPU drivers? It would be a good thing to do incase a file from the driver is stuck somewhere.

I take it you tried old drivers, other drivers

If you can get a hold of them you might get a prorated refund. Or you could always bake the card

Today I tried an 8600GTS, and I got no display. The monitor remains on standby.
This 8600GTS had been working... like 3 years ago...

I put the 8800GT back and at least there is display.

Can I be sure it's both cards that are dead and it's not a failing motherboard or something?

Edit: and what's more it's a pita to remove and reinstall the 5970 in my case because it fits very snugly. I had to use tools to make the sides drives cage slightly convex for it to enter...

Today I installed a 4890 in his pc, and got no display either. Same as had happened with my old 8600GTS..

I had a similar problem the other night. Although it's ati It didn't matter what I did to fix the problem.

Nothing would work.. my screen was full of red shadows representing the windows icons.

I thought well there goes my 900 buck gpu but a clean Windows install cured whatever fucked with my card.

I'm not saying to format BP. I'm just telling my story of a... thought the card was dead story :toast:

For a moment the pc tried to boot up with the 4890. I wasn't there but dad said that the monitor turned "reddish", then went black again and the pc didn't POST. I'm suspecting that it hadn't been a gpu problem all along.
Some months ago he had gave me the pc because it was turning off. I found out that the PSU fan had 2 blades broken and was jammed (don't ask me how that happened....)
Probably the PSU had been working for quite some time, fanless..

try finding out the PCI-E lanes, and taping over some of them. i had a few G31/P35 intel boards 'die', but running the slots at 1x or 4x made them work.

might not be the case with yours since it had a bad PSU, but it cant hurt anything either.

How can I since I get no display for the bios?
The mobo's got only one pci-e slot.
Tonight I'm going to check if onboard video works...

Btw he's still using that same PSU. I installed another fan on it... :eek:

you put tape/paper over the PCI-E slot on the board, before putting the card in. if you line it up with where a 4x slot would end, then you can get a damaged slot working again if the damage was after that.

look up w1zzys reviews on PCI-E lanes affecting performance, and you'll see where to tape.

Today I saw hands on what the pc was doing (yesterday I had only installed the 4890 without touching any software since I wasn't at home and didn't have anything to connect the pc tower to..)

Interesting.

- The pc POSTS and runs fine if I use the mobo's onboard video as long as the pci-e slot is empty.

- If I use and connect the 4890, the monitor goes from on (green led) to standby (orange led), on, standby, on, standby...and so on and so forth, without anything being displayed. By hearing the HDD working, it seems to be running and loading the OS, but obviously I can't see anything.

- If I use the mobo's onboard while leaving the 4890 in its slot, the pc doesn't POST. Even if I don't connnect the 6-pin's.

It looks to me that the 4890 is trying to display, but it doesn't have enough power.

The 8800GT displays, but only under "generic driver" no matter how much I try to install the proper Nvidia driver.

I'll be getting him a new PSU no matter what...
Then we'll see..

BP: hence taping the slot down. if the slot, or some of its power pins, are damaged - locking it down to 8x/4x/1x could eliminate the bad pins/power, and get it working again.

Or this one. Though what I'm really looking for is a modular one. After using modulars, it's hard going back to PSU's which look like they came out of a naughty Japanese comic.

I would try replacing PSU first, then motherboard. Everyone could use a spare PSU but spare motherboards are kind of useless.

My vote on PSU is for 700W Coolermaster GX Lite RS-700-ASAB, Quiet Fan, ATX v2.3. Never heard of the other brands and the price doesn't exactly bode of confidence (cheap, cheap, cheap--wouldn't trust them with a 100w+ card in there).

I'm tempted to go for the CX500 because it's only €69. But will it deliver sufficient power for a 4890?

There's a big jump to the TX650M which is €115 but then it's modular. I think I'll take this one..

more than enough room. dont underestimate corsair/seasonic PSU's.
