I'm looking to build a desktop for around $900 which has a Core i and a midrange or high-end graphics card. This would be used for gaming.

Any ideas for what parts to get? I need a case, power supply, etc. too.

Only gaming?
IMO get an i5 and save the money, HT hurts most games performance.
Spend that saved money on better graphics, hard drives w/e.

Take the time and fill out your current system specs and location information so we can recommend the proper vendors as well.

I take back what I said about i7 and will restate it to say: "Core i" for now. Seems like the smart thing.

As far as vendors go, Newegg is a fine place to link from.

Thanks for the Phenom II recommendation but I don't really know about Phenom II... the Core i just seems to have better horsepower in its core(s). Kind of thinking Core i to start with the basics in performance.

Just about $900, should do 4ghz easy.

That PSU I have used about 100 of them and am yet to have one burn out, I also test the range of every psu installed and they all hold pretty well, they also have a 7yr warranty.

I picked that DVD/RW because it has an NEC chipset and is probably the best burner available.
The ram because of it's tight timings will yield great latency and bandwidth.
Mobo should do 200+ Blck without a hiccup.

Mainly just mentioning it if you want to save a few bucks with this. Could then easily migrate to an AM3+ motherboard to become Bulldozer ready. If you go Core i series right now, you want have that future flexibility.

There are some good suggestions here, but I was expecting... something a bit more eccentric.

Whatever you do, the most expensive part of the desktop must be the motherboard
Buy balanced CPU and GPU, none of these two must be weak in order to save money

If you are willing to buy used parts, you would save tons of money. If gaming is the main goal, the GPU should be the most expensive.

You don't need an i7 for gaming. Get an i5.
