Pretty disappointing, looks like the rumors are becoming more likely to be true. If the GX2 is supposed to be their flagship 9 series card, then the 9800 gtx will have to be slower. Things aren't looking good for nv right now, looks like they've slacked and been caught off guard. I'm happy i bought myself a 3870X2 now. Now we need more r700 info!:D

if i did my math right thats an 81% boost right there, so its not that bad actully. Also Nvidia states that the GX2 will be 30%-50% more powerful than the Ultra and that is enough to crush the x2 anyway

+1 candle 86, and i doubt they're shivering in their boots, at the time of release they will have had 2 years to work on G100, its the ace up their sleeve, at present they're just humoring ATi...lol

Got your numbers a bit mixed up mate, you need to divide the GX2's by the ultra's, works out at about a 22% boost. When the X2 is 50fps faster than the ultra in some benchmarks, shows that it's got a lot of potential. At the moment it seems my X2 is cpu limited(q6600 @ 3.9ghz:eek:) so it's plenty fast for me. Thing is though is that we aren't seeing the usual generational performance leap, it's usually about 2x last gen's high end, and we're only seeing 20% at the moment, i'm sure some of you are a bit shocked. That's why i reckon nv have been caught off guard i think they weren't expecting the X2 to surpass their ultra by much.

    That's hardly a 20~23 % gain over the G80 Ultra :shadedshu

Anyways, if I happen to have 500 bucks to spare, I'll do myself a favour and bring home a HD3870-X2. It's better suited for the Indian conditions, contemporary Canadian engineering with good performance.

I am a little concerned about benchmark scores but real world is where its at so I'll take these with a grain of salt. I have read that due to the design of this card that once the 2nd GPU reaches its temperature threshold it will kick down the speed till it is back to normal operating temps.

9984 divided by 8154 = 1.2244 so that 3dm06 score is 22% higher than a g80 ultra. :) though i do agree with you, i can't see the GX2 competing with the X2 on price at all considering the current price of a g92 gts.i'd say an x2 would be an overall better purchase with crossfire tech getting increasingly more impressive each month. Cat 8.3s are looking great. I'm considering getting a 3870 or even another x2 to go with my current x2 when i need a bit more speed. :p

The rumors seem to be coming true. It seems the g92 has really come to its limits. The 9800gtx is comparable to a overclocked 8800gts g92, so no surprise there. The 9800gx2 and 9800gtx has some potential though, if they continue to fine tune the drivers.

I think it's too early for us to make a conclusion,
because it was being bench-ed at an awkward cpu-limited situation, as well as the immature driver.

Nobody said that when R680 pre-release reviews/benches were doing rounds.

    Exactly what I thought... ;)
And a 3dmark score isnt very expressive in terms of real world gaming. A buddy is beating my score, but I am playing my games smooth and he is not

I agree with Kylew... If someone a year ago said that the 9800GTX was gonna be about the same speed/just a bit faster than an 8800Ultra, people would have told them to F&$* off. This definitely seems like a dissapointing generation... I bet people with Ultras are pretty happy tho.

Hmmm.... I'm going to save my judgement until we get a proper review of the 9800GX2 and then compared to the 3870X2.

    It's starting to get interesting.

Scores are a part of it. It has to maintain a descent temprature(or work as a room heater at the same time) also the power consumption.
Why are they(hardware) only tested with 3dmark before releasing them?

I presume it's to give an initial impression on the sort of 3DMark performance. As 3DMark is the (industry) standard for benchmarking. It's also easier than trying it with newly released games that they haven't been able to optimise the card/drivers for.
