A friend of mine just bought a GTX980 on a FX-6300 and a 1600x900 display

my first question that pops up in my mind is why with a 1600x900 a GTX 960 should be able to do it, or is it bcs he is planning to go 1080p mby 120~144hz in the future?

Lot of good fps. Maybe limited on the CPU side is all.

Theres no rule book that says you have to run 2k+ res on high end cards. They are just more capable at handling multi monitor or high resolution gaming. Value of them comes into question when you stick them on lower res. Same thing happens with Crossfire/SLI.

I just don't think I'd spend $500 for a card at that res. 390 would more than suffice. Heck even a 970 if your okay with the 3.5GB quirk. 980s are at least $100 overpriced IMO. Should be more on par with the 390X price. I wouldn't go lower with NV, too many 128bit chips under that. AMD tho, got 380s at least.

Well, I can understand his/her logic if he/she want to run an ImageNet classification challenge with hundred thousands neurons of a convolutional neural network. GTX 980 will do great for that task.

Gaming though, well, that's the definition of overkill :D

Now, if only I know where do your friend live, I'll swap the 980 with my 770 real quick :p

In my defense, I'd like to state that I chose this card instead of the Ti version. I'm the retarded friend.

And my resolution is the 22" standard 1680x1050

You better make sure that your friend has some good cooling on his CPU and OC the crap out of it. Otherwise its a complete overkill, my choice would have been either a R9 380X or a GFX970 when he plays in that screensize.

If you have that kind of money handy, why haven't you bought a nicer display?

He's the king of imbalanced overkill. NH-D14 on a 3.7Ghz FX6300.

While his system is highly imbalanced and impractical, I've got to show appreciation for the sheer madness.

CPU matters less as resolution gets higher. Probably because frame rate is lower and the GPU is spending more time doing work compared to the CPU. Guru3D did a review on the matter back when the 7970 was new.

He just should get a better display for starters. 1080p or 1440p. If it runs 60 FPS, it shouldn't matter.

I never said get a bigger monitor, I said higher resolution. You can get a 1080p display that's 22". I like my Dell S2340Ms which are 23" 1080p displays. I got them on sale for 145 USD a while back.

This is a 21.5" version of what I have basically for 136.37 USD: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009H0XQPU/?tag=tec06d-20

I'm guessing you already owned the display since 1680x1050 is the older standard. 1080p don't cost much, I picked up a 24" ASUS the other for $250, looks like crap compared to CRT but it hey it was cheap. :p

Think I've been cursed lately, first I killed a 7950 with coffee, 2 weeks later both Sony Trinitrons died, and last week it was 8GB of 2400mhz HyperX which refused to boot. (Luckily Kingston accepted RMA).
Just waiting for the mobo or PSU to go next....:D

I think I spent 2 months trying to find a LCD that has some decent black color, there is nothing like my CRT - pitch black. My current monitor is Iiyama. So it would be a hard transition to 24" and 1080p, I just don't know a brand that provides proper blackness. Maybe a 24' Iiyama again?

Anyway, the 980 will keep those minimum frames up consistently on that resolution. Average and max frame rates are overrated.

Well, it would not have been my first choice as I would have preferred to upgrade some other parts first since the differences between the cheap cards (R9 390, R9 390X, and GTX 970) to the GTX 980 are not much for the huge mark up.

Not sure how much you spent on the GTX 980, but besides refurbs they are at least $500 (Give or take) which you could have devoted About 300 to the video card and 200-300 to the monitor and gotten so much more out of your purchase for similar levels of performance (Like buying a cheap R9 390 and the AOC Freesync 1080p 144hz monitor for $300 and $250 respectively).

However I can see why people go all in on video cards, it can last a lot longer for them without upgrading and you get great FPS in every game.

Pitch blacks would come from AMOLED/OLED (are they the same thing?) panels, haven't seen such a thing though, only on TV's.

Benchmark Scores Don't know any benchmark. It runs good enough for me.
Can you tell me what is your exact model of CRT? 22 inch got to be very heavy! My old Samsung syncmaster crt forget the size was pretty huge weighty. It is smaller than 22 inch I think it's 17 inch. I do miss CRT and its ability to not be affected by native resolutions. The thing I don't miss the size and the headaches staring at it . I am sad it's thrown away though, I spend my young days with it.
