A little connection help

About 6 months ago I could not connect to the internet but I was getting wifi. I reset my modem and did all the basic things I knew how. After a while I had to call the cable company. After going through the same things again he had me run some things in a command line. I was sending signals to the cable company and they were getting them with no packet loss so I was showing as connected to the net but I could not get on. Then he had me type a command in that reset my "jumper" I think he said.

Well mine works great now but my neighbor is having the same problem.. I cant remember what command to enter or how to do it to reset the " jumpers"

Anyone have an idea?

was he talking about renewing the IP address maybe?

ipconfig-renew or ipconfig-renew6 for IPv6.

I can remember resetting the IP and also something winsock??? We had tried a bunch of things then the last on worked and he call it something jumper rest??
I called my neighbor and told him to just call the cable company and get tech on the phone to help him.

Being able to ping an IP, but not a webpage is usually a DNS issue. If this is the case, one could set custom DNS to something like Google's 8.8.8.8 and likely have it work. Ideally, DNS will be your router's job. Some routers just forward requests to your ISPs DNS or copy your ISP's DNS directly to DHCP. A good router will handle local DNS and also act as a caching DNS server.

A "jumper" is often used to describe a short cable, likely the one going between your modem and router. Perhaps just unplug and re-plug that cable? That's usually just to have the router grab DHCP again (and to make sure the cable is properly seated).

It might be worth plugging a PC directly in to the modem. If that works, there's a good chance it's an issue with your router and/or home network.
