Acer has just placed an order for 80,000 pieces of AMD Z-series accelerated processing units. Based on essentially the same design as Fusion "Zacate", Z-series APUs are designed to have lower TDP and to be of higher quality, so they could be deployed in enterprise and IPC (industrial PC) environments. The AMD Z-01 is Acer's choice, this chip combines two x86-64 cores clocked at 1.00 GHz with AMD Radeon HD 6250 DirectX 11 compliant graphics, and a DDR3 memory controller. The TDP of the entire chip stands at 5.9W, it is built on the 40 nm process at TSMC.

Acer's first tablets based on AMD Z-01 will run Windows 7, since Android 3.0 (codenamed "Ice Cream Sandwich") is not going to be out any time before the end of 2011. Acer isn't the only big tablet-maker opting for AMD Z-series over Intel's Atom Pine Trail platform, MSI is also reported to be working on x86 tablets running AMD Z-series. Manufacturers are opting for Z-series over Pine Trail, because the latter has both higher price and TDP. With its relatively faster iGPU, Z-series should be able to drive graphics-intensive custom user-interfaces on tables sized up to 10.1-inches. Industry sources expect AMD to ship up to 500,000 units of the chip in the second half of 2011.

Good news for AMD and two cores @ 1ghz + iGPU at <5.9W is pretty damn good too for x86.

    P.S. what's Andriod 3.0? :D

Don't know if you're serious, but it's that mobile OS, version 3.0. But 3.0 was released months ago, as Honeycomb. That's targeted to tablets, and Ice Cream will be "a combination of Gingerbread (2.4, mainly for mobile phones) and Honeycomb into a "cohesive whole."" So I don't really see the need for them to wait.

Not that I mind Windows 7 though, I've always wanted a Windows tablet.

What's difference between AMD C-50 and AMD Z-Series?
    Why Z has lower tdp.

Don't know if you're serious, but you gave me the link to Android not Andriod.

    :toast:

I believe it has lower performing iGPU than E-series and probably some optimization they've done.

That was the case for the so called "T-series", which I assume is now the z-series.

I've been staying out of the tablet arena for now, but AMD's new chips might just pull me in. While I still see little use for tablets, there are certain specific situations that I, and my company, can use them for. While I don't exactly trust Acer, I'll have to keep an eye on this tablet.

After all, a 2core processor and a Radeon HD 6250 is more computing power than my secondary laptop has.

hmm is oaktrail really that bad ? I mean lower performance, higher tdp, and higher price ? Are intel crazy ? They won't even have a chance vs arm if they continue like this

I don't expect the battery will last more than 3 or 4 hours. Yes, it uses a lot less power than the average laptop but on a tablet you don't have a whole lot of room to put a full sized battery pack... Current ARM SoCs are still <1W

these chips still consume too much power. you are not trying to fold for the cure on a tablet. come back when it lasts at least 8 hours. preferably 10.

also, Android 3.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich"? lol
