would that software allow a mirror image to be made of a hard drive so you could say upgrade to a bigger hard drive without a reinstall?

yes, its exacly how ghost works, you can take a complete image byte-for-byte or file by file and restore it later, you can also backup to FTP/Share/HD, am running it on 64-bit windows 7 and works fine

It is only free if it identifies a seagate hard drive.
Otherwise it is basically Acronis True Image Home.

Because you can't. If you clone the hard drive and put it in a different computer, Windows freaks out and 99% of the time won't boot, or runs like completely shit if it does boot and requires reactivation anyway...
