I got about 23 fps on TERA all maxed settings, then I overclocked my 3.4ghz amd 965 black edition cpu to 3.63ghz and log into tera in the same spot 10 minutes later and my fps is 30-32. Dafuq? doesnt that mean my cpu is bottlenecking my gpu? how does 3.4ghz bottleneck a gtx 460?

The game seems very CPU dependant regardless of the GPU. Overclocking will help and you have a chip that is designed to overclock.

i got it to 3.63ghz without going over 65c with my gpu at 90c at the same time. i tried 3.74 but id get a blue screen, i set it to 220/x17 vcore at 1.4 but got blue screen, it works at 1.425 but then it gets to 67c with prime95 and my gpu at 90c at the same time so i figure 3.63 is good enough.. oh and just wondering... i was thinking of upgrading to a gtx 670. it wouldnt give such hot temps and would allow me to get 3.74ghz on my cpu under 65c i think. do you think my cpu would be a bottleneck tho? any thoughts?

A newer GPU isnt going to help in that game as it seems to be very CPU bound but it would help in other games.

Whats your CPU and GPU % when playing that game by chance?

Don't bother moving the fsb above 200. Use the unlocked multiplier on the chip.

Admittedly a better CPU would complement the GPU better. However, in your situation the poor performance is related to the game itself. I also believe your internet connection might be at play too.

i can download at 4.8mb/s and upload at 460kbps how would a better cpu be better? it only uses 60% during play. its good performance too i get butter smooth gameplay at maxed settings. but i just want a higher fps anyways lol

60% doesnt mean shit

the game is bottlenecking on 1 CPU core, thus no matter how many cores you have or how fast they are 1 core = bottleneck

essentially you have 4 cores, 1 core max = 25% if 2 cores are maxed thats 50%, most likely the game is using 1 core then spread out on 3 others giving you 60%, all it takes is 1 core to spike to 100% once its fully loaded that core will hold your performance back

Intel cpu would improve FPS drastically because each core is faster then AMD that means something like an i3 2100 would be faster in TERA etc slower in others, due to its better IPC and per core performance

your 965 BE needs better cooling and needs to be pushed further to get the best performance,

no different then most games today, AMD falls behind when it comes to per core performance, TERA is a game that is affected by that, there are other games much the same out their,

Shogun 2 comes to mind
Skyrim
and more

but specifically for TERA AMD CPU users have been having issues off and on for sometime now where as Intel users appear to be having no issues.

no it isnt maxing out on 1 core, i got 58-65% per core so i gave you an average 60% lol. and it doesnt have any issues its butter smooth at maxed settings
No intel fangirls allowed in this thread, amd makes great cpus too

As a rule of thumb MMO's are always very CPU dependant. WoW, TERA, Rift, TSW, all are very CPU-bound. Phenom II's are solid CPU's, but they are definitely going to show their age in the coming years.

then congratz its not maxing your cpu, dosent change the fact AMD's IPC is lacking and still doesnt get the job done,

most users running the game at 1920x1080 with a cpu equal to you are getting similar FPS with lower end GPUs, on various forums around the net

users with even 7970 paired with a 1090T are only getting 30fps its CPU limited, want better performance clock the CPU further with better cooling or go Intel

Im not here to argue if AMDs cpus are good or not thats not the question im answering TERA responds to better CPU performance more importantly IPC aka instructions per clock, Intel wins that category hands down, as such TERA will run better on most modern Intel CPUs.

AMD Phenom II and FX series performance has been terrible in TERA since Closed Beta hasnt changed since, its the game itself, much like again Shogun 2 and Skyrim, both benefit from the IPC boost intel offers but thats not true of ALL games, TERA just well, its really noticeable that said issues exist on all hardware for that title anyway,

play a different game and performance will of course be better lol one of the many pitfalls of PC gaming billions of combinations devs cant test or troubleshoot them all, shit happens

The site for the game and their forums are filled with issues of users with Phenom II systems games just a CPU whore again doesnt mean the Phenom II cant run it, just means clock it higher and performance will go up :toast:

You can push your voltage up to 1.45. Try that. My 945 can run past 3.8Ghz but not stable beyond 3.63Ghz. That is with 1.425v on this. Yeah I have tried pushing more but this chip doesn't seem to want to do it. But yours is a Black Edition so you should be able to get quite a bit more out of it.

Also make sure your Northbridge is running at a decent speed. I have noticed performance improve when I tweaked it. Specially when I found my last board was underclocking the NB. What I read was NB freq should be CPU speed x 2 then divide by 3 and it is within 200-300mhz of the number you get. So there is some room to boost if it is too slow. But I don't have much success beyond 2.5Ghz.

Graphic improvements can help. I play TOR a lot and there is a visible difference between 1 GTX460 and 2 460s in SLI. Enough to where I wouldn't run it without SLI anymore. The game is more CPU bound but GPU does help. I saw this in WoW too over the years. Yeah you can run the games on Intel IGPs with good CPUs but the fps would tank in populated areas/raids. Still needs a dedicated GPU to accompany the CPU.

But again, TERA is a young MMO atm. I have to laugh everytime I see someone expecting a new MMO to dish out a solid 60fps. They never do and some never will. Launches are buggy too. Performance will improve with time. That is one truth about MMOs that everyone forgets. Play an MMO a year or so into it and you'll have your more polished experience. Be there at launch and you'll have...stories of the hell you went through to tell noobs later who complain about some tiny little bug they find.
