AMD Athlon 64 3000+ vs. 3200+ for overclocking

I'm getting a new CPU for my new system tomorrow, and I'm planning on overclocking it.

But I was wondering, if I'm overclocking, is there any advantage of getting the 3200+ instead of the 3000+ (both venice cores)?
Aren't they basically the same CPU only one comes out of the box at a higher clock?
And if not, what is the difference between them?

Yes, the 3200+ has only 200Mhz more (2GHz, the 3000+ 1.8GHz) and except that, theres no difference

The difference between the chips is the multiplier. 3200 is 10 and 3000 is 9. What that means is if you wanted to run your RAM at 1:1 and you can get it to 250MHz, then you would multiply that by the processors multiplier to get your CPU speed. EX. 250x9=2250 (3000+), 250x10=2500(3200+).

The 3200 is not much more expensive and you could always bring the multiplier down to 9 if you wanted (just never above 10) to run at a high FSB. It gives you a little more freedom to customize your overclock vs. the 3000 for very little more coin.

Unfortunatly for the UK it's a slightly different story, it's an extra £10 for the 3200, which I know doesn't sound like much, but being a full time student, it's quite a lot for me. I think I'll just end up going for the 3000.

We used to have to pay $50 more for the 3200. But now its only $5 diff. I say go for the 3000 and later when you want to upgrade to something else you will be ahead 10 pounds.

a 3500+ is $109 and it has a multiplyer 11 so overclocking is way easier, mines at 2.64ghz @ 1.425v it can go to 2.75 on air but my ram doesnt allow it

They have been dropping quite a bit. First it was like $140 for a 3200+, then $110, then $105, now $99. I wonder if it'll go lower...

3200+ has very good multi, I would go with it if im switching to AMD.

Advantage of a 3200+ versus a 3000+ is if your mobo doesn't allow 300+ HTT, then you'll be stuck in your overclock with a 3000+. With a 3200+ at 10x multi, 300 HTT is 3Ghz. But with my DFI I'm easily at 325 HTT and above so my 3000+ enjoys it a lot.

Another option with the 3200+ that is interesting is flexibility to properly time your ram multi and processor multi for optimum overclock as there is 9.5X and 10X CPU multi available .

I'm a student too dammit and £10 aint squat! Seriously get the 3200 or you will do yourself and your comp a great injustice, especially if you dont have good ram.

Agree, but then i would cause I have one, it really does make a BIG difference (the 10x multiplier as opposed to the 9x) if you have limited voltage options in your motherboards BIOS as we know the higher the FSB the more revs required and as I have a modded ASROCK Dual Sata II voltmodded to 1.55 and thats me lot so I need all the revs I can get!

on asrock and most mobo you can only lower the multiplier say from x11 on on mine to x10 or x9 i cant do x12! and i also have a asrock and if your gonna overclock go for the 3200 you wont be let down for a little more money it will do you better

Actually I think you will find its the CPU not the motherboard thats locked on the 3200 so no matter what board you use you aint gonna get higher than 10x.

they are all locked upwards except the FX range.. the cool and quite stuff works by lowering the multiplyer which is the only reason they are unlocked downwards.. it is the cpu..

get a venice 3000+ if you can still find one, those chips OC like hell!!!

i have a 3200+ venice, and it won't allow me to go past 2.65Ghz.... but for a venice 3000+, it's pretty common to hit 800mhz OC for those chips... and even 1ghz OC to some crazy overclocks....

I went for the 3000+ in the end, I've got a DFI board which quite easily sticks at 330FSB.
I've got it at 2.8GHz stable, which is quite a nice 56% overclock.
