AMD Cancels Retail Phenom II X4 960T Thuban Quad Core Processors

AMD sent out an e-mail today letting the press know that we shouldn't expect to see any retail Phenom II X4 960T Thuban quad-core processors being sold individually on the retail market. These were very interested parts as the engineering samples that were available could be unlocked to become six-core processors. If we had to guess these processors will be available only in OEM systems on motherboards that don't have core unlocking technology in the BIOS. This is a big let down as it could have easily been the best price versus performance processor on the market for AMD. I wonder what AMD will be doing with all the fall out from the Thuban six-core processors now or if the OEM market will scoop them all up?

This is disappointing, as I was looking forward to unlocking a couple of cores worth of Thuban goodness. Looks like I'll just pick up a 1055T now.

The six core ones must be selling enough, and presumably they don't have that many duds.

At the retail cost of the 1055T and 1090T you can't really blame them. They still have the best bang for your buck CPUs by far :D

I wish the performance of Thuban was a little better than what was delivered, now my next upgrade will be 8 core for sure. Bulldozer better be worth the wait :)

Yeah, no point in the quads, with the price of the 1055t, might as well just go 6 and get the for sure thing.

+1 to the shameless plug.

The price point of the 1055T is shocking in all honesty.....who'd of thought a year ago you could pick up a 6 core for $200, even less when they are on sale.

Hopefully they don't have enough dead cores to warrant marketing them as a lesser product. AMD's 65nm fab was horrible and 45nm appears to be much better. Maybe AMD finally hit their stride with this latest generation of 45nm processors.

had I not bought my new droid milestone I would have one of these, and if my paycheck is what I am thinking it will be today I might still get one. Send my 940 to my parents to get them some more compute power.

Why? Why have this in mind? The 6 cores are so cheap and clock oh so well. I was benching my 1055t at 3.9ghz on the factory air cooler.... Numerous benches in a row at that, these things clock unbelievably easier than the PII Quads and Tri's. 3.9ghz on the factory cooler, 1.1ghz OC without any extra investment...

Why are you set on having a quad when the 6 cores clock just as well and the 1055 is dirt cheap.
