Sticking to its announcement, AMD released the ATI Catalyst 10.4a Preview driver suite. In the run up to Catalyst 10.4, the company wanted to quickly resolve an important issue pertaining to Battlefield: Bad Company 2 game load times, which made it release a series of preview drivers, starting with Catalyst 10.4 Preview which resolved the issue for ATI Radeon HD 5000 series GPUs, and now the Catalyst 10.4a Preview, which resolves it for ATI Radeon HD 4000, HD 3000, HD 2000 series GPUs. With this hotfix applied, users will experience reduced map game load times on Bad Company 2. Catalyst 10.4 WHQL will be released later this month.

AMD is actually the one who ditched support for earlier versions of their cards, NV has a much better reputation regarding on this, the reason why they don't have older cards supported with 197.55 WHQL is older cards can't get quad-SLi'ed, ppl may try something stupid with the new drivers, you know what I mean?

    What differenct does that make?
It is not like the older DX9 cards support WDDM 1.1 drivers anyways, the nVidia driver packs support those cards doesn't mean the actual .dll are updated.

    Anyways regarding stupid people...
    Stupid people are stupid. :p

Edit: Yes the stupid people are the ones that go Quad-SLI on XP or with older cards etc.

yeah, try running an Nforce 2/3 platform on 7. have fun finding drivers.

On topic, these are good. They solve the flickering textures in crossfire, they made my load times go from 1:30 to about 20 seconds, and my performance has boosted quite a lot - almost feels like crossfire wasnt working previously.

then click the report button. Personally i see no flamebait or personal attacks in his post.

    He made two observations:

    1. ATI doesnt release drivers for cards that technically dont work in 7 (they dont support WDDM1.1, so if you want to use them as WDDM1.0 cards, use vista drivers)

    2. stupid people are stupid. Now since he didnt name or even imply that anybody here is stupid, thats not really trolling.

yeah, I read his post too fast, and I actually edited that post straight away, before you posted.
And you know why I acted like this, it wasn't about him really, I just hated fanboism specially for moderators, and I didn't ask you to do anything, you know what I mean.

I'm about as techie as a wet sponge but i read a lot and did read somewhere that adobe photoshop is/has leant toward CUDA for it's software. This would maybe mean less than optimum performance for the ATI cards?

Use an older driver , i found that when AMD updated the opengl to 4.0 i lost hardware acceleration with adobe and pinnacle , maybe we should wait for a patch from adobe before using catalyst 10.3 or 10.4.

My opinion about Nvidia's long lasting support solidified when I tried to get Vista support for nForce2 system.
The XP drivers for nForce were updated maybe once. And that still didn't do the justice (buggy DirectSound for example).

ATI said they dropped pre x2000 support after cat 9.4, but they updated these the drivers to cat 10.2 anyway. That's not so bad.

ATi stated that support was lessened, not completely dropped. Legacy products should see quarterly updates, rather than the monthly of current products.

Not really. The new content is too new of a release yet. This is most likely a version of driver headed for WHQL testing. Based on that, they've not had much time to work on that issue.

That's not really on topic, but Nvidia releases drivers when they are ready.

If you have an older video card, use a driver that works. I'm still using Catalyst 7.4 on one of my machines.
