They basically have to give them away for free. They really aren't making much off of consoles, if that were the case they would have made a fortune when the Wii sold tens of millions of units, but they didn't.

Until AMD fixes their most pressing problem - poor management - things aren't going to get better.

Nobody really expected Wii to be a big hit. Even Nintendo were going to call it quits at first. I guess ATI didn't negotiate as hard as they should have per unit.

Behind the scenes they could be making money. As somebody else said they could be operating at a loss deliberately to reduce the tax burdens.

When I made those investments I was making almost 70k a year and my wife was making close to 90k. Now my wife is unemployed and I got laid off and got a new job making a little over half of what I used to. I also have two more kids then I did at the time. We had to move out of our 275k house and leave Miami. I was doing very well before people realized all the loop holes in NAFTA and outsourced half my industry to South America.

And if I said it was a "few grand" before 14k is a "few grand". Ive always said 14k sir.

Anyway my past screw ups don't have anything to do with this thread. I was grazed the subject as someone said it (AMD) was a good investment. I was just giving an example of how its not. Lets get back on topic.

the lesson is don't ever invest in a tech company unless you are willing to lose it all. even the big companies like AMD are full of fail. maybe one day they will hire better management and get more aggressive.

They seem to have good ideas, its just that their competitors (Intel, NVidia) are the best.

I think of AMD as a great company all-around, the problem is their competitors are heavy hitters.

I can see why the investment failed... a "few" apparently = 14(k). Who else thinks few = more than 4,5, or 6 (as several takes over after that).

It's called America, where we can borrow as much as we want, and if we feel like paying it back later, we do.

I believe that actually would have been a smart move at the time, I believe their stock jumped quite a bit in the Athlon 64 days, would have made decent money as long as you sold before Phenom I.
