An easy one for hardware pros

Just received a motherboard and I usually use a test fixture I put together; a piece of plywood with some metal stand-offs glued in place. But I wanted to ask, can I test run a motherboard while it's resting on the pink anti-static foam that came with the board or is that foam conductive enough to cause problems ?

Yes, you'll be fine IMO but technically, anti-static bags and the pink bubble wrap offer no protection on the outside of the bag (they are also known as "Metal out" bags); they only give proper protection on the inside. I've done it on the outside countless times with no issue, but it's worth knowing.

I've heard the foam can melt and that you should use the box instead.

I just use the box since it is the size of the motherboard, isn't conductive, will withstand some heat, and it is a handy way to use addon cards on your board without the case (line the back edge up with the long edge of the box, obviously). Pink foam is ESD protective from what I know (it's why it is dyed pink and not another color).

good idea. I'll do that when I test my next board. Just installed an ASRock 970 Extreme4 and so far it seems to be an excellent board - very pleased :cool:
