Just thought I'd let people know. If your sick of M$, Ubuntu just had a major update to LTS channel.

I wonder if MS pulled this update. None of my Win10 machines have this update but all have the KB5036892 update.

They don't do any proper QA, so normal to get issues like this occasionally. Also why ltsc exists for enterprises who don't want their os to break.

You're the QA team!

Indeed, which is why i dont get why so many people are so eager to run the newest os, which is essentially being a beta tester...

Same reason i run win10 and i always have updates delayed for as long as possible...

No slowdown on any of my Win 10 or 11 rigs using Nord VPN but I have updates turned off using WUB. I only allow security updates when needed and even then long after the updates are released.

true, but there is no way of knowing which ones.
Well I will tell you that neither Surfshark nor Proton VPN are affected by this. Both work fine on a Windows 11 PC with the April 2024 Windows Update.

Just another reason to have a Mac next to your Windows boxes. lol

The Mac in my System Specs runs both VPNs fine.

:):p:D

Anyhow anyone who has been running Windows for more than a couple months should understand that the monthly Patch Tuesday updates are typically one step forward, two steps back... This is why I never install these Windows Updates on the actual Patch Tuesday they are released. I always wait a week or two and check sysadmin news sites like Bleeping Computer or Parmar's Windows Latest to see what kind of dumpster fires the latest KBs are.

The chances of someone remotely hacking your home PC are extremely small... Unless you have next week's lottery numbers stored on it, in which case, I'll do it now. :p

You probably have a better chance getting hit by a car walking across the street. Or even having your healthcare provider's servers get breached.

The bad guys are more interested in breaking into servers run by Marriott, healthcare systems, universities, etc. They really don't care about much about Joe Consumer. Sure it would be a headache and an uncomfortable violation of your sense of security but unless you are doing something really, Really, REALLY stupid (which some people here at TPU are quite capable of), this probably isn't top priority.

The typical consumer user is better off changing weak old passwords than trying to install Patch Tuesday dumpster fire updates when they are released.

I'm not saying you should toss caution out the window. But in the big scheme of things, religiously installing Microsoft's trash on the second Tuesday of every month isn't really the best idea in 2024 (based on the frequency of busted KBs).

Botnets often practice "dragnet hacks" of known exploits so this line of thinking is really flawed.

It doesn't take "top priority," just lax security practices. Which honestly, I see advised here regularly.

If your software is in support you are fine. But a lot of users here are using builds with support dropped or resisting updates. There's the rub.

In addition, botnets typically consist of compromised machines that participate in attacks unbeknownst to their owners.

This issue was created solely so that many more people would come on forums like this and state which VPN they are using, so that M$ would find out which ones they still have to create breakage hacks for and then release said hack under the guise of a KB or some other type of "update"...

And, no, I won't say which one I use, but so far, it is still working perfectly !

You're welcome :D

That's why your next computer should be a Mac! So when Microsoft borks Windows, you can still get things done and move on with your life. No Microsoft Patch Tuesday update is going to wedge my Mac mini M2 Pro! Just forget about gaming though, lol.

But I have my Switch for that...

You can also dual boot Linux. With multiple SSDs, it is easier than ever to run both Linux and Windows on the same computer and have both as first class citizens.

I had dual boot Windows-Linux systems from 1998-2002. I say this as a former UNIX/Linux system administrator: Linux on the desktop sucked rocks. I kicked Linux to the curb in 2002 in favor of an Apple iBook running OS X 10.1. Instantly reduced my system administration load by 95%.

I still occasionally boot Linux (Raspian or whatever they call it) on a Raspberry Pi 4. And in 2024 Linux on the desktop still sucks rocks. I just boot up my RPi4's Linux partition every six months to confirm that Linux hasn't magically gotten better overnight.

Linux is still a great choice for servers and in embedded systems (POS terminals, gas pumps, routers, even my Super NES Classic). But Linux sucks as a consumer computer operating system. Linux proponents shot themselves in the foot by not have a main distribution. Today there are dozens and dozens of small distributions, none with enough manpower to make it a credible replacement for Windows or macOS. And these dozens of distros replaced dozens of distros that existed ten years ago, and dozens more that existed thirty years ago. You never hear about people here praising Gentoo Linux here in 2024.

But thanks for the laughs!

:)

P.S., don't forget to uncheck xzutils when you install Linux! Good fun!!

;)

This is a forum for enthusiasts so recommending Linux shouldn't be a head-scratcher. Granted, Mac OS is better for consumers, but picking a newbie-friendly distro like Ubuntu or Mint should be fine for many. Ubuntu, in particular, has been around for nearly twenty years now.

As far as xzutils is concerned, it isn't as if MacOS doesn't have zero day exploits.

Well people are free to try out Linux. It's not a financial burden on anyone. I tried all the major distros 25 years ago: Red Hat, Debian, SuSE, Slackware as well as some more obscure ones like Gentoo.

And the Raspbian installation process is pretty smooth. It's still less than a wonderful end user experience. God only knows what I'd have to do to get my HP OfficeJet MPF's scanner to work. Or how to reprogram a Logitech Harmony remote on it. With Windows and Mac, I just visit the myharmony.com website and download one piece of software.

As far as xzutils is concerned, it isn't as if MacOS doesn't have zero day exploits.

I know, never said macOS was flawless. As a former UNIX/Linux sysadmin, I know very well there is no such thing as a bugfree operating system (or any other software for that matter). But combining ease of use, system administration load, end user software availability, learning curve, reliability, support, security and about 8-10 other factors, macOS is far easier to recommend than Linux on the desktop.

I'd be the last person to recommend macOS as a server OS. That said, macOS's cousin iOS seems to be pretty functional as a smartphone OS. And Windows has... nothing. lol

Anyhow I mentioned xzutils because as a former UNIX/Linux guy, I know what buttons to press to get Linux pundits' attention. I used to make the same denials around the turn of the Millennium too. I know.

How's that fine end user documentation coming along? Linux guys have been working on that for 30+ years (and no, reading manpages or the source code comments is not consumer documentation). Battery management software? Device drivers? Features like biometric identification working straight out of the box first time you boot? Easy to project your computer screen onto a nearby smart TV?

And while you're at it, why not build a content store like the Mac App Store and the iTunes Store? Also a brainless one-click backup system like Apple's TimeMachine would be important. So consumers don't lose their cat photos forever. Remember, Ellen Feiss lost her homework on a Windows PC.

;)

Fix all of that shit (and more) then let me know. I'll be happy to revisit Linux on the desktop at that time.

Linux is great. Just not as a consumer desktop.

You'll have to try much harder to push my buttons. You raise a number of fair points and some of them are part of why the year of the Linux Desktop will probably always be in the future. It will probably arrive at the same time as commercial electricity generation from nuclear fusion.
