A thread was posted on another forum I frequent about a phone call scam where they claim to be Microsoft and ask you install some things to repair the security breach they've detected.

Thought id post the number used here to make you guys n gals aware in case you get a phone call.

    number is : 0203 286 9239
Apparently the lad who started the thread Googled it and its a 'Cost Trap'.

Thread is here (I realise it's against the rules but due to its nature thought it might be helpful. Pm me if not and ill remove it.) :

    So yea, Heads up.

Shame we don't have some form of list of all these numbers, I bet people on here get it quite often.

It's called Social Engineering. It's been going on in America for years, and has only gotten popular for use in the UK within the last few years. Either way, Microsoft will never call you, same as your bank. Funnily enough, Tim Berners-Lee's sister(?) was a victim of this kind of thing last year, only it was to do with banking fraud, not computer stuff. She ended up handing somebody £3000 after they came to her doorstep, prior to this asking her to remove the money from her bank account herself. Her account manager told her he strongly advised against it, but in the end he is not allowed to stop someone from withdrawing money.

I received one a few weeks ago. Tried to drag it out and have fun, but apparently, even in "dumb consumer" mode, I'm still too much of a smart ass, and he hung up on me after about 5 minutes heheh.

It is really funny if the mic of the phone is broken or the "line" is bad so they get bad reception. "Herro? Herro? Any one there, or you are on bad rine?"
Not intending to be a "rascist", BTW. But it's a real thing that occurred to me once.
