anybody flasehd a 290x 8GB to a 390x ??

I flashed bothed my reference XFX 290x GPUs with the modded 4GB 390x BIOS no problems. Just research, there is a thread at guru3d about this subject.

Only problem I can see here are the memory timings. The R9-390X use much higher clocked memory and having too tight timings at such clocks may cause stability problems. But other than that, it should work directly. They have dual BIOS anyway, you can hot-swap re-flash them if needed so I don't think you can really go wrong if you know how AMD BIOS and the switching works.

Everyone here is just whining. I thought we were a tech enthusiast forum, not a nanny forum!

The 390/390x actually does have some improvements over the 290/290x. Not hardware related, but something in the drivers about dynamic frame rate or that kind of thing. It makes sense to want to flash the card then, to get the performance built into the card.

Let me get this straight. You put a new 8GB BIOS from a refresh on to an old 4GB card and it worked?

Pretty much he put another 290x Bios on it, just with 390x clocks. The card is still recognized for what it is and not as a 300 series, basically it is a glorified overclock using a new bios. The 8 gig version would be interesting but there was no reference version of that. Gone are the days of unlocking your Video Card into a better one... or maybe it will be AMD again with Fury/Nano being unlockable to Fury x levels, that could totally pull them out of the pit even if people would buy the cheaper models, but more will buy because the chance to get more performance for less. Those 6950 and Phenom II days.

Good read. I'm pretty sure now, if I had a 290/X, I wouldn't do it.

• It doesn't sound very stable for most cards(if any are actually to be considered stable at all afterwards).
• Doesn't even work at all for many cards(black screens galore).
• Heats your card's VRMs up significantly, regardless of which card you have, or which BIOS mods are applied(390X has vastly improved VRM cooling solutions to deal with that fact).
• Provides only slight performance improvement(if any) in some apps, while lowering performance in others.

I'm sure you think you're pretty cool showing off like this. But I, for one, am not impressed. All you've done here is reinforce the popular opinion that it's not wise to flash a BIOS from another card IMO. Thanks for that though!

im running 3 cards now cfx 1106 /1505 with the bios which was impossible if you knew my build history, im gaming crysis 3 and gtav im not showing off just have the means to do it. plus i have full cover blocks to do so.

i dont see what i reinforced other than "my" setup is working better

if your having black screens its because your memory is to high before voltage is being applied which is why i used the lower mem version. if your already struggling with temps dont do it if your a noob dont do it.

i dont see how i hijacked it as other ppl mention they done the same i just posted a screen shot that i was successful plus nobody said the handful of 8gb 290x owners couldnt chime in ive seen way worse hijacks on this forum, all said and done i'll start my own thread instead of debating with those who don't own the card.

You're basically turning a $375 card into a $429 card and unlocking the performance in your card by doing this, bravo!

This reminds me of back in the day, when I flashed my Radeon 9800Pro with an R360 core using a custom 9800XT 128MB BIOS, just by doing so I gained over 20% performance from the faster clocks and enhanced memory timings found in the XT card. Hope this experiment ends well, and kudos on your new unlocked card

After flashing 290s to 390x GPUz will read Hynix chips even if you have another type of memory chip on your card. I have Elpida chips and GPUz still says Hynix.

So what would you say was the best % of gain from a nonofficial flash?

I know the 7950 flash was popular but really how much gain could it be? 5% over a OC card?
