4870X2 and a 4870. Last I was in XP, I was on 9.4, iirc. Don't currently have XP to test 9.8 or 9.9 tho.

I'm still not having any luck. Can someone with a 3870x2 and XP verify if the adaptor shows linked of disabled in ccc? thanks.

If you only have a 3870x2 then you won't get a crossfire option section in the CCC - it only appears when you have 2 or more physical cards in crossfire. The only way to disable crossfire on an x2 card is to disable the catalyst AI.

same setup different issue

I have the same cards I have a sapphire 3870x2 and a sapphire 3870 toxic edition in crossfire config on a msi k9a2 platinum mobo, mine however show up in CCC as crossfire enabled. My problem is that my system will not display the system post information anymore. The display will only show up once the system is at the windows login screen. :banghead: any ideas?

plug your monitor(s) into the other card.

often i plug my monitor into the slave card by mistake, and get that issue.

hmm, is there a way to designate what card is the master and what card is the slave? my mobo manual does not state that one slot is master and another slave. it has 4 vid card slots ...2 dark blue ones x16 slots and 2 light blue slots x8 slots. my 3870x2 is plugged into the slot that the mobo docs say is slot 1 of the x16 slots and the 3870 is plugged into slot 2 of the x16 slots and the monitor is plugged into the 3870x2.
Thank for the really fast reply.

its based on the motherboard slots.

and i know it well as i made thate mistake less than an hour ago, when i got home from a lan.

honestly, i'd just mess around and see. one would normaly assume the topmost slot on the motherboard (usually the 16x slot) to be the master.

I will try and plug the monitor into the regular 3870, and see if that makes the difference, I was hopeing not to have to move the 3870x2 but if the monitor being plugged into the 3870 works. Than it looks like i have allot of rearranging to do in my case to fit that behemoth 3870x2 into the slot the 3870 is plugged into.

I had that problem also... I removed the single 3870 and un-installed all ati drivers... Use driver sweeper in safe mode.... leave out the single gpu and install the CCC drivers... re-boot.... power down... install the 3870 and hook up the cross fire strap... power up and it should work for ya... also CCC 9.7 was by far the best driver for the 3870's in tri-fire... also make sure to hook up your monitor cable to the 3870 and not to the x2 gpu....

it doesn't matter what pci-e slot you have the gpu's in.... in all my testing I found having the monitor plugged into the single gpu worked the best....also GPU-Z should show 3 gpus

So I should plug into the single 3870 and not the X2? Wouldn't that be slower to have the single gpu as the master and the x2 as a slave? Also it does currently show up as 3 gpu in device manager as well as in CCC.

well after plugging the monitor cable into the 3870 card and rebooting the computer, i got my post screen back but no windows login, plugged the monitor cable back into the x2 and got windows back. I unistalled CCC and vid drivers, shut down the pc than plugged monitor cable back into the 3870 (non X2) card. Got post and windows. reinstalled CCC and everything booted great with one exception. Now i do not have crossfire. The x2 card is not being seen at all.

Ok so this time i unistalled CCC removed both cards from the system and made sure the x2 card was in the x16 slot designated as slot 1 on the mobo. places the 3870 card in the slot designated as slot 2 on the mobo... left the link cable off booted up the system and reinstalled the CCC. After the software was installed I shut the system down and installed the link cable and booted the system up. I am back to the same issue, all cards are seen in the system, GPU-Z shows 3 cards but crossfire is disabled. CCC shows 3 cards in the hardware information screen but I have no option to enable crossfire. Thinking back I should have just left it alone and forgot about being able to see the system post. :banghead::banghead:

Try the 9.4 drivers WileE used. He mentioned it was working in XP with that version. I gave up on it and used the 3870s in other systems and sold the 3870x2. I have a single 4870 but it's slower. Maybe if the 4870x2s get dirt cheap I'll snag one and try 3-way on it.

I'm going to give up myself, I spent the entire day screwing with this thing and have gotten close a few times but it really is not worth the time and effort anymore. I have built several SLI systems and honestly at this point that is the way to go. AMD/ATI claims about crossfire are totally false! I actually been trying all the drivers from 9.2 to 9.9 and 9.9 is the only one that has actually ever even showed that I have the 3870 card in the system an will only do crapfire if I have the lcd plugged into the X2 and even than I have no icons on the screen and my system post at bootup will not display.

Well I can tell you my 3870x2+3870 did work in Vista and Windows7. I'm running Win7x64 now and it's not too bad. I like it better then Vista. I'm finding that 7 does have alot of bugs though like large file copies transfering under 10mb/s. More like 2mb/s. New OS, same old problems.

Well, also some asus mobo's had issues on x2 cards they updated whole lineup of 775 boards because of this twice. Think this might be similar issue.

Yeah, when I first got the 4870x2 and put it as the master with the 4870 1GB in the second slot, my computer would only show post from the 4870 1GB. All I had to do was update my mobo bios, and then I got my normal post on the 4870X2.

I'm running a MSI mobo and a amd 790fx & SB600 chip-set. Supposedly this mobo is extremely compatible with several combination of crossfire compatible cards, it was even recommended on the ATI/AMD web page for several months before newer models came out. My experience thus far has been to the contrary though.

It dosnt matter because as soon as you plug a single 3870 along with an 3870x2 every thing goes to x8 mode on the pci-e slots...;)

Does anyone no if any older drivers work? cheers!
