a discontinued kogan "smart TV" dongle. its the first gen one, not the one currently for sale. i'll have to look into its hardware.

if you can extract the kernel image you should be-able to patch it
depending on the device you may need to split the boot.img into the boot and kernel images and then remerge them after patching

if natron doesnt mind some thread hijacking (since his device seems to use the same hardware), some instructions would be great. i'm heavily experienced with samsung android devices, but these work quite bit differently as far as modding goes.

my TS3 server is always running, but alas the real world has called - phone technician fixed a bad phone line at work and has put our DSL, EFTPOS and fax on the one line... so you know, none of them work now.

might be-able to dump /boot via ADB using DD
but without a way to recover it if it bombs out its gonna permabrick it
they need to provide full source as required by the GPL but good luck getting them todo that
I gave up on rockchip devices ages go even overclocked to snot they are pure garbage they just don't have the power for serious media playback at anything above 720p
I had my MK908 screaming at 1700-cpu,800Gpu,600DDR3 and it still wasn't capable enough to play 1080P MKV from a USB HDD even using MXplayer pro it would play but you would get noticeable stutter

I now have a hardkernel ODROID-XU3 light which screams right along
running XBMC flawlessly handles anything you throw at it

assuming that the device uses the standard partition layout
try this
adb shell
su
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 of=/sdcard/boot.img
exit
adb pull /sdcard/boot.img
then you would need to split the boot.img into ramdisk and zimage(kernel)
patch it and then re-merge it and then use DD to overwrite dd if=/sdcard/boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18

and hopefully not render the device permanently unusable (very likely) no way of knowing if the image tools with correctly put the boot.img back together correctly or if the patch-o-matic will patch the image correctly,even if it does if the overclock isn't stable you won't be-able to get a shell to undo it
if you trash it without a way to boot the thing into download mode you will have no way of recovering it

very interesting, i am trying to understand why so many companies are using a version from 2013, especially when 4.4.4 is supposed to have a major security update

at the same time, apparently yours has been updated in december at the earliest, so maybe some companies backported that security patch without changing the .2

also wonder if the kernel version has any relevance, i have a (4.4.4) tablet here with 3.10.20, yours is 3.0.36

because these cheap chinese companies are using old hardware with small amounts of ram, so they stick with 'tested' versions of android. there are many for sale on 4.0.4 still

many for sale isnt the statistic i'm looking at since they could be old stock, i'm only looking at devices that launched in the past ~less than a year, ones that have recent enough updates (like OP's), or even ones that are going to launch soon in 2015 (like some blu or alcatel phones i saw)

it's only the minor minor version i'm wondering about, NOT 4.3 to 4.4 which is understandable (jelly bean to kitkat, although 4.1 to 4.3 are all jelly bean)

5.1 and 5.2 have already been spotted in the wild. problem is samsung got sued by asshats like apple and need different releases worldwide and carriers wanted customised software, so needing to do regional releases that the carriers then have to tweak modify and approve really, really slows it all down.

yeah thats why i dont trust them - you have to root them and go through it carefull to be sure theres no malware preinstalled as well.
