Been running a Powercolor 3870 X2 with DDR4 for about a 2 years now and still going strong. Tried overclocking it a couple times but end results were BSOD's lol. Is anyone else still using any version of this card?

I skipped the 2xxx and 3xxx series altogether. I went from 2x 1950XTX to 4870x2. The 4870x2 is still going strong and plays games well at 2560x1600.

I'm going to wait for the 6xxx series to be released before I decide on an upgrade.
If the 6K series does not add anything overly exciting, I may try to find an inexpensive 5970.
(Hopefully prices on them will drop when the 6Ks are releeased. :/ )

i really don't think ill ever upgrade again. my rig is perfect for all the games i play.

i dont know when the 4xxx came out but i got it in march of 2009.

i swtiched teams. but by far the best ATI card I ever owned was the 3870X2 in fact I had 4 of them i loved them, the 4870X2 was in no way the performance jump the 3870X2 was same with the 5970 I wont ever own a 5970 due to the issues with them, cold boot problems grren/grey lines/screen and the list goes on

had a 8600GT and then HD4850, the performance boost was undescribeable lol.
after the HD4850 i got an GTX285 in a great deal, but then i sold it and bought a HD5850 for this money, a great jump in overclocking abilities.

    3870x2 (x2) for ME

3870x2 (x2) and Q6600 all water-cooled. They still look great since I don't game much nowadays so no point burning up more $$ for a 4xxx or even a 5xxx series card.

Hi all. I found this thread doing some googling and decided to join up :)

I own two machines (well, three, but the third is a pile of parts with bits needed). Any way, my main rig is a 940 OC with a pair of 5770s. It's fast.

However due to me constantly messing with it I decided to build a second PC to fall back on (ever tried doing an RMA without a PC? god it's a nightmare !).

At first I went for an EVGA 8800u KO edition that I found on Ebay. Only paid £55 for it as one of the VGA lines is screwed on head one (no green, so you only get purple, DVI works 100% though). I was using the second head but after about a month it died (seems it had been baked).

Got onto the seller and when I asked if it had been on a sheet with the cookies he sorta crapped it and sent me a £75 refund. At that point I got a 3870x2 for £50. Mint, boxed, and Sapphire to boot.

I love it. Firstly it benches and games about 15-40% better than the benches and tests I have found in reviews (that were done when it first came out) so I would imagine that drivers have come on leaps and bounds. Secondly it's almost on par in 'real world' terms with my 5770 Xfire (being that games feel about the same even if the FPS count is less).

It also obliterates the 8800 Ultra (which has now been rebaked with flux flow and thicker thermal pads to put pressure down to keep it from warping) which looking at early benches and reviews it shouldn't do, but it does.

Infact, so impressed am I that I have shifted my Fallout 3 install (all 13gb of it with hundreds of mods) onto that machine and play laying in bed :D

For £50 it's simply the best card I have ever owned. I've created a custom profile with MSI's Afterburner and it never goes above 60c even on full load in Fallout 3 (the key to keeping these toasters alive).

I'll go on to say that I love it so much that there is something on the horizon....

    My existing card...

    And what's coming...

£50 on a Scan clearance. And this, £50 on Ebay. Again boxed mint and all accessories.

It's time to see if Quadfire 3870x2 has improved with age as much as the 3870x2.

Full report to follow once it all arrives :)

    Hey guys, quick post !

The Sapphire is DOA and I have been forced to pay return shipping so this will be delayed for a few days until I get another board in.

Well you'll actually be surprised at how capable they still are tbh.

I did some prelim benchmarks on mine earlier with a Phenom 9950 and just a single card. 8880 3Dmarks in Vantage. Now I know that a 280GTX XXX scores about 11k tops.

What was interesting though was that I also got a BFG PCI Physx PPU (I only want it for Mirror's Edge, which it will do with its eyes closed) and I went from 7900 CPU marks (no Cuda to help out) to 11000 :)

Bios update. My Asrocks don't support the 5 series out of the box.

A 3870x2 would be killer for my old system infact anything would it runs a crap 8600GS.
Went from a x800GTO to a 8800gt to the GTX260 i have right now, im a budget concious enthusiast

Wasn't the 3870x2 really immature as far as scaling and drivers went, i know its a good card but the 4850/4870x2 scale better in comparison i think? feel free to correct.

    Hmmmn cheapo crossfire action
