12 core you mean? is it really 2 physical CPUs? or a 6 core chip with HT? seriously either way i can add another chip change the mobo and it would still rape it and still be cheaper.

Not sure about mac servers but schools buy a lot of macs as they get discounts.

For that kind of price i think it's too much but that said repairs cost a hell load but dont mac repairs cast more.

Sickens me when schools can buy 3K laptops even if they are at a lower price. Then they have the nerve to complain about not being payed enough or \ and the school needs to close down to lack of funds.

if i would EVER and i mean EVER buy a Mac i would most Def. make sure it had the Software I WANTED/NEEDED to be included! good thing Steam now supports Mac on some games. imagine the future for Steam and Mac. Hmm....

I'm sure you can find 12gb of RAM, 1tb of Hard drive, and a 5770 with the other $3000

You can't do it at an OEM, with Tech support and a full warranty.

You cannot compare build it yourself prices to OEM prices. 2 different markets.

i agree and disagree. you can easily just use the actual parts warrentee. infact id consider that better than turning in your entire PC because the 5770 died.

You don't get the fast turn around that way.

The sheet music would be nice, but I'm sure it would be easy to do that in FL (piano roll) - I use FL to make parts of a song and then assemble it in Acid - my roommate uses FL for it all, and I just find FL too complicated for mastering... Once upon a time Logic was PC + Mac, them Apple bought it... =/ I'm sure Macs are great for music, but don't you find being limited to the integrated audio (Intel I think?) to be lacking? On my ghetto tower I got an Audigy 2 Platinum with the front inputs and MIDI (sadly, I gotta run XP to use them, but XP runs fast on the old bastard so no big loss)

We use MacPros in our hobby studio, with Logic, Reason and Pro Tools and use Waves Plug-ins. We chose MacPros (the First Dual Dual core machines.) because we had been using Logic since it was still PC and Mac, and wanted to continue using it. Firepods take care of the on-board sound limitation.

It's worth depends on it's usage. If the machine is intended to be a gamer, no, the MacPro is not worth it. If it is intended to be an OEM bought workstation, then yes, the MacPro can be worth it.

I think you'll find tho, the Apple absolutely does gouge on some upgrades. Never upgrade the ram or hard drives. Supply your own.

My point was not about the particular configurations; it's that the proposed Newegg build has the value of another CPU in other components. Replace them with ones equivalent to the Mac's and you can get two Xeons instead.

One could go a lot further with it, questioning the point of a 12-core workstation with a 1TB HDD, or suggesting that the proposed Newegg build utilize a less expensive PSU (the Mac Pro uses a Delta-built 980w PSU FWIW), etc.
