ASUS 9400 GT and ASUS 8500 GT: which is the best?

9400GT I believe. I have used to have an 8500GT, it wasn't so great.

yes they are but one is 80 nm while the other is 65nm. Go the 9400gt, same performance, runs cooler

If you are in the US, get the Asus 9600GSO. An extra $10 vs the 9400 will probably triple the performance 
Otherwise, go for the 9400, it's basically a die-shrunk 8500gt

9400 is the better card, but this is a battle of the suck. Seriously I wouldn't even consider either card for any build, even HTCP. I've gotta go with ION on the 9600GSO suggestion, hell even a 8600GTS or an 9600GT would be miles ahead the 9400.
Are you looking for PCI or AGP? Perhaps that may account for the awkward choices.

Just be aware... that 9600gso is the weaker 128-bit, 8 rop version of it's bigger cousin, the 192-bit 12 rop version

there are no released agp 9 series nvidia cards. as for pci, i know there are pci 8500 but dont know about 9400.

if you are going to be going any gaming whatsoever then stretch out your budget another $20-$30 and grab a 9600GT / HD4670. It will be well worth it. Even grab a second hand one. I see 9600GT's go for $50 in Aussie on ebay, that is damn cheap. that would be around $35US I spose.
